Catfishing a conman back on dating app days after jail release

BBC News

Within days of being released from his seventh prison term for romance fraud, Raymond McDonald was back on a dating app looking for his next victim. Over more than 20 years he had racked up 58 convictions, mostly for fraud and theft, while telling lies on an industrial scale and taking thousands of pounds from women for holidays and weddings which were never going to happen. This time when he went looking, the BBC was waiting. He thought he was having a date with Kaye, but instead found himself being approached by a BBC reporter and camera crew. He had met Kaye online and, calling himself Rob, told her he was a deep-sea diver looking for a wife.

US to transfer Islamic State prisoners from Syria to Iraq

BBC News

The US military has launched a mission to transfer up to 7,000 Islamic State (IS) group fighters from prisons in north-eastern Syria to Iraq, as Syrian government forces take control of areas long controlled by Kurdish-led forces. US Central Command said it had already moved 150 IS fighters from Hassakeh province to a secure location in Iraq. The move aimed to prevent a breakout that would pose a direct threat to the United States and regional security, it added. On Tuesday night, Syria's government announced a new ceasefire with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), after the militia alliance withdrew from al-Hol camp, which holds thousands of relatives of IS fighters. Separately on Wednesday, Syria's defence ministry said seven soldiers were killed in a drone attack by Kurdish forces in the Kurdish-dominated province of Hasakah.

An AI model trained on prison phone calls now looks for planned crimes in those calls

MIT Technology Review

The model is built to detect when crimes are being "contemplated." A US telecom company trained an AI model on years of inmates' phone and video calls and is now piloting that model to scan their calls, texts, and emails in the hope of predicting and preventing crimes. Securus Technologies president Kevin Elder told that the company began building its AI tools in 2023, using its massive database of recorded calls to train AI models to detect criminal activity. It created one model, for example, using seven years of calls made by inmates in the Texas prison system, but it has been working on building other state-or county-specific models. Over the past year, Elder says, Securus has been piloting the AI tools to monitor inmate conversations in real time (the company declined to specify where this is taking place, but its customers include jails holding people awaiting trial, prisons for those serving sentences, and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detention facilities). "We can point that large language model at an entire treasure trove [of data]," Elder says, "to detect and understand when crimes are being thought about or contemplated, so that you're catching it much earlier in the cycle."

One Vigilante, 22 Cell Towers, and a World of Conspiracies

WIRED

As dawn spread over San Antonio on September 9, 2021, almond-colored smoke began to fill the sky above the city's Far West Side. The plumes were whorling off the top of a 132-foot-tall cell tower that overshadows an office park just north of SeaWorld. At a hotel a mile away, a paramedic snapped a photo of the spectacle and posted it to the r/sanantonio subreddit. "Cell tower on fire around 1604 and Culebra," he wrote. In typical Reddit fashion, the comments section piled up with corny jokes. "Blazing 5G speeds," quipped one user. "I hope no one inhales those fumes, the Covid transmission via 5G will be a lot more potent that way," wrote another, in a swipe at the conspiracy theorists who claim that radiation from 5G towers caused the Covid-19 pandemic. The wisecracks went on: "Can you hear me now?" "Great, some hero trying to save us from 5G." That self-styled hero was actually lurking in the comments. As he followed the thread on his phone, Sean Aaron Smith delighted in the sheer volume of attention the tower fire was receiving, even if most of it dripped with sarcasm. A lean, tattooed--and until recently, entirely apolitical--27-year-old, Smith had come to view 5G as the linchpin of a globalist plot to zombify humanity. To resist that supposed scheme, he'd spent the past five months setting Texas cell towers ablaze. Smith's crude and quixotic campaign against 5G was precisely the sort of security threat that was fast becoming one of the US government's top concerns in 2021.
