Royals, Maga and tech CEOs: What we learned from state banquet guest list
Beneath gilded portraits and suits of armour in Windsor Castle, 160 guests wined and dined at a lavish banquet to fete US President Donald Trump's unprecedented second state visit to the UK on Wednesday evening. Along with the impeccable table settings, three-course meal and custom cocktail, who was there and, just as importantly, who was seated next to who is carefully planned, since the event is as much about diplomacy as it is about fine dining. This year's guest list was conspicuously missing screen stars or celebrity faces, with not even royal perennials like Sir David Beckham or Sir Elton John attending. Instead, the list was mostly royals, tech and finance executives, and politicos from both sides of the Atlantic. From Trump's seat of honour at the centre of the table, next to his host King Charles III, those up and down the table ranged from lesser-known but influential White House players to professional golfers.

Maximum points: what is the most influential video game ever?
Ahead of the 21st Bafta games awards this April, the institution is running a public survey asking people to nominate the most influential video game of all time. As the survey points out, this is an open-ended question: early, groundbreaking titles such as Space Invaders and Pong regularly crop up as answers because they helped write the rules of the form, but on a personal level, the right game at the right time can be exceptionally influential, too. For players, it's often the games that made us feel differently about what games could do that feel the most influential. For a game designer, a film director, a writer or a musician, one particular game might inspire a whole creative era. Inspired by Bafta's survey, we asked people from across games and culture for their most influential game – and not one name cropped up twice.
Personalized and Sequential Text-to-Image Generation

We address the problem of personalized, interactive text-to-image (T2I) generation, designing a reinforcement learning (RL) agent which iteratively improves a set of generated images for a user through a sequence of prompt expansions. Using human raters, we create a novel dataset of sequential preferences, which we leverage, together with large-scale open-source (non-sequential) datasets. We construct user-preference and user-choice models using an EM strategy and identify varying user preference types. We then leverage a large multimodal language model (LMM) and a value-based RL approach to suggest a personalized and diverse slate of prompt expansions to the user. Our Personalized And Sequential Text-to-image Agent (PASTA) extends T2I models with personalized multi-turn capabilities, fostering collaborative co-creation and addressing uncertainty or underspecification in a user's intent. We evaluate PASTA using human raters, showing significant improvement compared to baseline methods. We also release our sequential rater dataset and simulated user-rater interactions to support future research in personalized, multi-turn T2I generation.

OpenAI Announces a New AI Model That Solves Difficult Problems Step by Step
OpenAI made the last big breakthrough in artificial intelligence by increasing the size of its models to dizzying proportions, when it introduced GPT-4 last year. The company today announced a new advance that signals a shift in approach--a model that can "reason" logically through many difficult problems and is significantly smarter than existing AI without a major scale-up. The new model, dubbed OpenAI-o1, can solve problems that stump existing AI models, including OpenAI's most powerful existing model, GPT-4o. Rather than summon up an answer in one step, as a large language model normally does, it reasons through the problem, effectively thinking out loud as a person might, before arriving at the right result. "This is what we consider the new paradigm in these models," Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, tells WIRED.

'The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom' Finally Gives Zelda Her Own Game
After decades of serving as the named inspiration for the beloved franchise The Legend of Zelda, the series' titular princess is finally getting her own game. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, releasing September 26 for Nintendo Switch, gives Zelda her very own hero's journey after Link goes missing. But it does not, sadly, give her her own sword. Players have been clamoring for Hyrule's favorite princess to take the lead in a Zelda game for years now, or at least to be playable in games like Tears of the Kingdom. Excitement around Zelda's triumph was immediately evident on X after Nintendo announced the game Tuesday during one of its Direct presentations.
Story Generation from Visual Inputs: Techniques, Related Tasks, and Challenges
Oliveira, Daniel A. P., Ribeiro, Eugénio, de Matos, David Martins
Creating engaging narratives from visual data is crucial for automated digital media consumption, assistive technologies, and interactive entertainment. This survey covers methodologies used in the generation of these narratives, focusing on their principles, strengths, and limitations. The survey also covers tasks related to automatic story generation, such as image and video captioning, and visual question answering, as well as story generation without visual inputs. These tasks share common challenges with visual story generation and have served as inspiration for the techniques used in the field. We analyze the main datasets and evaluation metrics, providing a critical perspective on their limitations.

The Kate Middleton Situation Was Already a Mess. The Royals Have Now Made It a Permanent Crisis.
It's been just over a week since Kate Middleton, the internet's favorite "missing person," claimed that a photoshopped image of her with her children on U.K. Mother's Day was edited by her, for unspecified reasons. Then, on Monday, we had our first recorded sighting of the princess, out shopping with Prince William at the Royal Farms Windsor Farm Shop, near Windsor Castle. The video was released by TMZ and the Sun, and stills from it were plastered on the front pages of all the British tabloids Tuesday. Supposedly, it was taken by a 40-year-man, Nelson Silva, who lives nearby and was quoted in TMZ as saying: "Kate looked happy and relaxed. They look happy just to be able to go to a shop and mingle.
