Hands-on: Windows 11's new AI tools aren't ready for prime time

PCWorld

AI will change the way that we work. Or so says the most fervent purveyors of the tech, which now includes Microsoft. But after seeing ChatGPT, Dall-E, and other AI systems integrated into the latest versions of Windows 11, Office, and the company's Microsoft 365 platform, I can't say that I agree. Make no mistake, Microsoft is pushing new tools like its Copilot system hard, integrating it into systems that are staples for the company and hundreds of millions of users. But speaking as a power user -- and accepting the limited perspective that gives me for many who are not -- I can't see these new tools being anything more than an occasional curiosity.

'American Pie' icon Don McLean on AI: 'It'll be better than what passes itself off as music today'

FOX News

People in Texas sounded off on AI job displacement, with half of people who spoke to Fox News convinced that the tech will rob them of work. Don McLean, the one-man creative force behind the hit songs "American Pie," "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)," "And I Love You So," "Castles in the Air," and other songs, albums, tours and projects, shared thoughts about artificial intelligence, music, creativity and authenticity with Fox News Digital in a recent phone interview amid his current "American Pie" 50th anniversary tour. "When you talk about artificial intelligence right now -- I'm not sure what that means at the moment, but clearly it's evolving," he said from California, where he was making several tour stops after returning from concert performances in Australia. "With any technology, you have an inflection point where it takes off," said McLean. "Today, AI has merely presented itself -- but the inflection point hasn't been reached yet. He added, "I also want to say that before a form of artificial intelligence was in use -- and it's been in use for many years -- the tape recorder and the photographic lens were both honest. If you took a picture, that was the way something looked." However, in current times, he said, "you have all this photoshopping and massaging and whatnot, so now the camera lies.

Companies scramble to incorporate generative AI in products

Whether these new AI technologies are ready for prime time remains a wide-open question. Even assuming these early bugs are worked out, a host of thorny business and legal challenges remain, as we've been writing about. Bringing Atomistic Deep Learning to Prime Time

#artificialintelligence

A common thread in headline-grabbing AI achievements is the need for massive compute resources, which are often only available to large corporations. Recent reviews of large language models have argued that non-profit research organizations should also be investigating models at scale [3]. Even doing a thorough hyperparameter optimization for a moderately-sized dataset can be a burden. As the business value of atomistic DL grows, large tech companies will become increasingly active in the field.

Why conversational AI is now ready for prime time

#artificialintelligence

Conversational artificial intelligence serves as the interface between a person and a computer, through which organizations can achieve engaging two-way interactions. The technology is usually associated with call centers and virtual assistants/chatbots, although it can be applied in practically every vertical industry. Thanks to machine learning and AI breakthroughs during the last couple of years, conversational AI has grown beyond chatbots to include a variety of use cases. The next wave of IT innovation will be powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. We look at the ways companies can take advantage of it and how to get started.

Sky Glass review: streaming TV not quite ready for prime time

The Guardian

Glass is Sky's new voice-controlled streaming television – an ambitious attempt to ditch the satellite dish and provide pay TV straight to the screen, with no set top box required. The television comes in three sizes starting at £649 for a 43in screen, or £13 a month over four years, which works out at £25 cheaper too. Glass is a heavy beast, the 55in version weighs 28kg with its stand – about 10kg more than a standard 55in TV – but hides its bulk well from the front. The body is aluminium in a choice of five colours, and houses the built-in soundbar below the screen, making it look a bit like Apple's iMac. The 4K LCD screen ticks most of the specifications boxes.

McDonald's Making Major Change To The Customer Experience With This Innovation

#artificialintelligence

McDonald's has entered a strategic partnership with IBM to develop and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) technology that will help the fast-food giant automate its drive-thru lanes. According to the companies' joint statement about the partnership, the agreement will see IBM acquire McD Tech Labs which was created to advance employee and customer-facing innovations following McDonald's 2019 acquisition of Apprente. The IBM/McDonald's partnership will "accelerate McDonald's efforts to provide an even more convenient and unique customer and crew experience." The current technology was tested this summer at a handful of McDonald's locations in Chicago and according to the chain saw "substantial benefits" for both customers and staff, though with a roughly 85 percent accuracy does require some refinement. According to McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski, IBM's AI expertise thus makes them the "ideal partner" for the fast-food chain.

AI For Cancer Detection: Ready for Prime Time or Caution Advised?

#artificialintelligence

Over the last couple of years, there has been much discussion about the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) for improving healthcare. But how much of this is true and how much simply hype? Is the technology really a godsend to radiologists and other healthcare professionals, or is it making their lives more difficult? There is no doubt that AI-based image recognition technology has improved enormously in recent years. Many researchers and companies are now working on different types of programs with a view to improving speed, accuracy and costs of cancer screening.
