Pornhub Will Block New UK Users Starting Next Week to Protest 'Flawed' ID Law

WIRED

Only users who have already registered and completed age verification will be able to access the world's largest porn site. Pornhub is blocking itself in the United Kingdom on February 2, arguing that the country's age verification laws are ineffective, the company announced on Tuesday. As of February 2, only users who have already registered with Pornhub and completed age verification will be able to access the site. New users will not be able to register. The move comes after a new set of provisions aimed at keeping minors from viewing porn kicked in last July, requiring adults to submit to age-estimating face scans, ID document uploads, credit card checks, and more, in order to verify that they are not minors.

Pornhub Is Urging Tech Giants to Enact Device-Based Age Verification

WIRED

The company sent letters to Apple, Google, and Microsoft pushing for an alternative way to keep minors from viewing porn, as US and UK laws have caused its traffic to plummet. In letters sent to Apple, Google, and Microsoft this week, Pornhub's parent company urged the tech giants to support device-based age verification in their app stores and across their operating systems, WIRED has learned. "Based on our real-world experience with existing age assurance laws, we strongly support the initiative to protect minors online," reads the letter sent by Anthony Penhale, chief legal officer for Aylo, which owns Pornhub, Brazzers, Redtube, and YouPorn. "However, we have found site-based age assurance approaches to be fundamentally flawed and counterproductive." The letter adds that site-based age verification methods have "failed to achieve their primary objective: protecting minors from accessing age-inappropriate material online."

The Relay app allows users to track their porn-free streaks and get group support. Its creators say they're taking a stand against porn and AI erotica. Jamie would meticulously schedule his days around finding time alone to watch porn and masturbate--often up to five times a day. The 32-year-old Michigan engineer, who did not want to use his real name due to privacy concerns, first watched porn at the impressionable age of 12, but never realized he had a problem until just after his father's funeral three years ago. "I didn't shed a single tear," he says.

AI companies start winning the copyright fight

The Guardian

If you need me after this newsletter publishes, I will be busy poring over photos from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding, the gaudiest and most star-studded affair to disrupt technology news this year. I found it a tacky and spectacular affair. Everyone who was anyone was there, except for Charlize Theron, who, unprompted, said on Monday: "I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. Judge William Alsup compared the Anthropic model's use of books to a "reader aspiring to be a writer." And the next day, Meta: The US district judge Vince Chhabria, in San Francisco, said in his decision on the Meta case that the authors had not presented enough evidence that the technology company's AI would cause "market dilution" by flooding the market with work similar to theirs. Judging by the rulings in favor of Meta and Anthropic, the authors are facing an uphill battle. Three weeks ago, Disney and NBCUniversal sued Midjourney, alleging that the ...

How One AI Startup Founder Cornered Microsoft Into Finally Taking Down Explicit Videos of Her

WIRED

Breeze Liu's online nightmare started with a phone call. In April 2020, a college classmate rang Liu, then 24 years old, to tell her an explicit video of her was on PornHub under the title "Korean teen." Liu alleges it had been filmed without her permission when she was 17 and uploaded without her consent. Over time, the video mushroomed and multiplied: it was saved, posted on other porn websites and, Liu claims, used to create intimate deepfake videos that spread across the web. The impact on Liu was profound.

The Sticky Dilemmas of Pornhub's Next Chapter

WIRED

It was evening in Berlin and Alex Kekesi was surrounded by pornstars. Venus, the international adult entertainment convention, was underway, and Kekesi happened to be at dinner with several well-known creators when the discussion shifted to generative AI. Kekesi listened as a few of the women shared similar stories from set. They expressed frustrations about their likeness being exploited. They talked of having to physically cross out language in their contract before filming.

Deepfake Creators Are Revictimizing GirlsDoPorn Sex Trafficking Survivors

WIRED

This article contains descriptions of sex trafficking and abuse. For years, nonconsensual deepfake pornography has been used to harass, silence, shame, and abuse women. Celebrities and influencers have their faces implanted into existing adult videos; men have used the technology to place "friends" into explicit videos; and boys have allegedly created "nude" images of their female classmates. However, among the ever growing harassment and abuse, deepfake creators have now, arguably, hit a new low: using videos of sex trafficking victims as the basis of the nonconsensual videos. Over the past two months, an account on the largest deepfake sexual abuse website has posted 12 celebrity videos that are based on footage from GirlsDoPorn, a now-defunct sex trafficking operation that the US Department of Justice says its operators used to conspire and commit sex trafficking through "force, fraud, and coercion," tricking five women--and allegedly hundreds more-- into making sex videos that were subsequently posted online.

How Pornhub searches for solar eclipse porn have skyrocketed

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Only in America would people get randy heading into a solar eclipse event. Pornhub revealed that terms like'eclipse sex' and'eclipse orgasm' became the top searches on Monday, rising by a shocking 6,800 percent. Curious users looked up friskier terms like'sex during eclipse' and'eclipse my c***.' 'Eclipse karma' also topped the list, which appeared to be a porn star performing sexual acts on different partners. However, people appeared to take a break from their Pornhub eclipse fetishes for roughly an hour to watch the celestial event, but resumed normal levels once the moon bypassed the sun. If people were hoping to find a solar eclipse sub-genre on Pornhub, they were left disappointed. There was one video of the eclipse uploaded to Pornhub - but nothing explicit in the footage.

A Pornhub Chatbot Stopped Millions From Searching for Child Abuse Videos

WIRED

For the past two years, millions of people searching for child abuse videos on Pornhub's UK website have been interrupted. Each of the 4.4 million times someone has typed in words or phrases linked to abuse, a warning message has blocked the page, saying that kind of content is illegal. And in half the cases, a chatbot has also pointed people to where they can seek help. The warning message and chatbot were deployed by Pornhub as part of a trial program, conducted with two UK-based child protection organizations, to find out whether people could be nudged away from looking for illegal material with small interventions. A new report analyzing the test, shared exclusively with WIRED, says the pop-ups led to a decrease in the number of searches for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and saw scores of people seek support for their behavior.

This Chatbot Aims to Steer People Away From Child Abuse Material

WIRED

There are huge volumes of child sexual abuse photos and videos online--millions of pieces are removed from the web every year. These illegal images are often found on social media websites, image hosting services, dark web forums, and legal pornography websites. Now a new tool on one of the biggest pornography websites is trying to interrupt people as they search for child sexual abuse material and redirect them to a service where they can get help. Since March this year, each time someone has searched for a word or phrase that could be related to child sexual abuse material (also known as CSAM) on Pornhub's UK website, a chatbot has appeared and interrupted their attempted search, asking them whether they want to get help with the behavior they're showing. During the first 30 days of the system's trial, users triggered the chatbot 173,904 times.
