Optimal camera-robot pose estimation in linear time from points and lines

Camera pose estimation is a fundamental problem in robotics. This paper focuses on two issues of interest: First, point and line features have complementary advantages, and it is of great value to design a uniform algorithm that can fuse them effectively; Second, with the development of modern front-end techniques, a large number of features can exist in a single image, which presents a potential for highly accurate robot pose estimation. With these observations, we propose AOPnP(L), an optimal linear-time camera-robot pose estimation algorithm from points and lines. Specifically, we represent a line with two distinct points on it and unify the noise model for point and line measurements where noises are added to 2D points in the image. By utilizing Plucker coordinates for line parameterization, we formulate a maximum likelihood (ML) problem for combined point and line measurements. To optimally solve the ML problem, AOPnP(L) adopts a two-step estimation scheme. In the first step, a consistent estimate that can converge to the true pose is devised by virtue of bias elimination. In the second step, a single Gauss-Newton iteration is executed to refine the initial estimate. AOPnP(L) features theoretical optimality in the sense that its mean squared error converges to the Cramer-Rao lower bound. Moreover, it owns a linear time complexity. These properties make it well-suited for precision-demanding and real-time robot pose estimation. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate our theoretical developments and demonstrate the superiority of AOPnP(L) in both static localization and dynamic odometry systems.


Camera Agnostic Two-Head Network for Ego-Lane Inference

Vision-based ego-lane inference using High-Definition (HD) maps is essential in autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems. The traditional approach necessitates well-calibrated cameras, which confines variation of camera configuration, as the algorithm relies on intrinsic and extrinsic calibration. In this paper, we propose a learning-based ego-lane inference by directly estimating the ego-lane index from a single image. To enhance robust performance, our model incorporates the two-head structure inferring ego-lane in two perspectives simultaneously. Furthermore, we utilize an attention mechanism guided by vanishing point-and-line to adapt to changes in viewpoint without requiring accurate calibration. The high adaptability of our model was validated in diverse environments, devices, and camera mounting points and orientations.


An Accurate and Real-time Relative Pose Estimation from Triple Point-line Images by Decoupling Rotation and Translation

Line features are valid complements for point features in man-made environments. 3D-2D constraints provided by line features have been widely used in Visual Odometry (VO) and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) systems. However, how to accurately solve three-view relative motion only with 2D observations of points and lines in real time has not been fully explored. In this paper, we propose a novel three-view pose solver based on rotation-translation decoupled estimation. First, a high-precision rotation estimation method based on normal vector coplanarity constraints that consider the uncertainty of observations is proposed, which can be solved by Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm efficiently. Second, a robust linear translation constraint that minimizes the degree of the rotation components and feature observation components in equations is elaborately designed for estimating translations accurately. Experiments on synthetic data and real-world data show that the proposed approach improves both rotation and translation accuracy compared to the classical trifocal-tensor-based method and the state-of-the-art two-view algorithm in outdoor and indoor environments.

Abstract: We show how the birth of perspective painting in the Italian Renaissance led to a new way of interpreting space that resulted in the creation of projective geometry. Unlike other works on this subject, we explicitly show how the craft of the painters implied the introduction of new points and lines (points and lines at infinity) and their projective coordinates to complete the Euclidean space to what is now called projective space. Structure PLP-SLAM: Efficient Sparse Mapping and Localization using Point, Line and Plane for Monocular, RGB-D and Stereo Cameras

This paper presents a visual SLAM system that uses both points and lines for robust camera localization, and simultaneously performs a piece-wise planar reconstruction (PPR) of the environment to provide a structural map in real-time. One of the biggest challenges in parallel tracking and mapping with a monocular camera is to keep the scale consistent when reconstructing the geometric primitives. This further introduces difficulties in graph optimization of the bundle adjustment (BA) step. We solve these problems by proposing several run-time optimizations on the reconstructed lines and planes. Our system is able to run with depth and stereo sensors in addition to the monocular setting. Our proposed SLAM tightly incorporates the semantic and geometric features to boost both frontend pose tracking and backend map optimization. We evaluate our system exhaustively on various datasets, and show that we outperform state-of-the-art methods in terms of trajectory precision. The code of PLP-SLAM has been made available in open-source for the research community (https://github.com/PeterFWS/Structure-PLP-SLAM).
