From gas to groceries, has Trump kept his promise to tackle rising prices?
From gas to groceries, has Trump kept his promise to tackle rising prices? President Donald Trump was swept to power for a second time on the back of a central campaign promise to tackle inflation. The steep rise in the cost of living was top of voters' minds and Trump blamed President Joe Biden. He also made sweeping promises to bring down prices for Americans starting on day one. One year on from his victory, BBC Verify revisits some of the president's claims.

Trump's AI 'declaration' reminiscent of JFK pledge to put a man on the moon: Former White House IT official
Theresa Payton, the first female Chief Information Officer for the White House during the Bush administration, says Trump's AI push could have enormous economic impact if the right guidelines are set. President Donald Trump's recent AI announcement has the potential to jumpstart a technological "renaissance" in the United States and serve as a strong declaration, similar to former President John F. Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon, according to a top former White House information technology (IT) official. During a speech at the White House, Trump announced that Softbank, OpenAI and Oracle have joined forces for Stargate, a project to build data centers in the U.S. for powering AI. The initial investment for the project will be 100 billion, with plans to expand to 500 billion over the next four years. The first data center built under the initiative will be in Texas, and it will eventually expand to other states. Speaking with Fox News Digital, Theresa Payton, the first female White House Chief Information Officer during President George W. Bush's administration, says the news, which Trump calls the "largest AI infrastructure project, by far, in history," has her attention.
Trump, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son announce 100bn US investment
President-elect Donald Trump, with SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son at his side, has announced that SoftBank will invest 100bn in the United States over the next four years in what would be a boost to the domestic economy. In a joint appearance with Son on Monday, Trump said that the investment would create 100,000 jobs focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and related infrastructure, with the money to be deployed before the end of Trump's term. Trump said the investment was evidence of "monumental confidence in America's future". He playfully encouraged Son to make the investment 200bn with the Japanese billionaire responding that he would try. The 100bn pledge, made at a flag-bedecked event at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, fits in with Trump's vow to bolster the US economy and reduce the effect of inflation on Americans during his second term, which begins on January 20.

John Lewis brings back 'never knowingly undersold'
John Lewis brings back'never knowingly undersold' Getty Images Retailer John Lewis is bringing back its "never knowingly undersold" price pledge from Monday, two years after abandoning it. It will also apply to online sales for the first time, whereas it previously only applied to in-store shopping, and will use AI to match the prices of 25 top retailers. The department store chain has been trying to win back customers after a tough few years that has seen it cut jobs and close several stores. It swung back to profit earlier this year, but is expected to continue shedding jobs as it seeks to revive its fortunes. The decision by John Lewis' new managing director Pete Ruis to restore the price pledge marks a change of direction from his predecessor.

Google's emissions climb nearly 50% in five years due to AI energy demand
Google's goal of reducing its climate footprint is in jeopardy as it relies on more and more energy-hungry data centres to power its new artificial intelligence products. The tech giant revealed Tuesday that its greenhouse gas emissions have climbed 48% over the past five years. Google said electricity consumption by data centres and supply chain emissions were the primary cause of the increase. It also revealed in its annual environmental report that its emissions had risen by 13% year-on-year. The tech company, which has invested substantially in AI, said its "extremely ambitious" goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2030 "won't be easy".

Scarlett Johansson's AI row has echoes of Silicon Valley's bad old days
So far, the AI giants have largely played ball on paper. At the world's first AI Safety Summit six months ago, a bunch of tech bosses signed a voluntary pledge to create responsible, safe products that would maximise the benefits of AI technology and minimise its risks. Those risks, originally identified by the event organisers, were the proper stuff of nightmares. Six months later, when the summit reconvened, the word "safety" had been removed entirely from the conference title. Last week, a draft UK government report from a group of 30 independent experts concluded that there was "no evidence yet" that AI could generate a biological weapon or carry out a sophisticated cyber attack.

Equilibria in multiagent online problems with predictions
Istrate, Gabriel, Bonchiş, Cosmin, Bogdan, Victor
We study the power of (competitive) algorithms with predictions in a multiagent setting. To this extent we introduce a multiagent version of the ski-rental problem. In this problem agents can collaborate by pooling resources to get a group license for some asset. If the license price is not met agents have to rent the asset individually for the day at a unit price. Otherwise the license becomes available forever to everyone at no extra cost. Our main contribution is a best-response analysis of a single-agent competitive algorithm that assumes perfect knowledge of other agents' actions (but no knowledge of its own renting time). We then analyze the setting when agents have a predictor for their own active time, yielding a tradeoff between robustness and consistency. We investigate the effect of using such a predictor in an equilibrium, as well as the new equilibria formed in this way.

PM attacks Starmer on defence as election lines drawn
The Conservatives are currently behind Labour in the polls and Mr Sunak faces an uphill struggle to turn thing around before the next general election, expected this year. In his 30 minute speech - which sounded like the opening salvo in an election campaign and included a personal attack on the Labour leader - Mr Sunak described a future that was both a time of danger but also of transformation. He warned of threats from an "axis of authoritarian powers" such as Russia, Iran, North Korea and China and spoke of the challenges to cyber security. However, he also argued there were reasons for optimism citing the potential of artificial intelligence to improve education and health. In contrast to his conference speech last autumn, which had the theme of change, he also sought to defend the Conservatives' time in government, while attempting to personify the future.

'Very scary': Mark Zuckerberg's pledge to build advanced AI alarms experts
Mark Zuckerberg has been accused of taking an irresponsible approach to artificial intelligence after committing to building a powerful AI system on a par with human levels of intelligence. The Facebook founder has also raised the prospect of making it freely available to the public. The Meta chief executive has said the company will attempt to build an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system and make it open source, meaning it will be accessible to developers outside the company. The system should be made "as widely available as we responsibly can", he added. In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said it was clear that the next generation of tech services "requires building full general intelligence".

Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, who's primary challenging the president, said he's'disappointed' Biden ally Rep. James Clyburn accused him of disrespecting Black voters. President Biden is kicking off his rural America tour Wednesday in Minnesota, the home state of Rep. Dean Phillips, who launched his 2024 Democratic presidential primary challenge just days ago. Biden is expected to announce $5 billion in new investments, including $1.7 billion in "climate-smart agriculture programs," $1 billion in broadband deployment, and some $2 billion in rural development programs. "I think there are obviously a lot of folks in Minnesota who understand and appreciate climate-smart agriculture and the enormous new income opportunities and environmental benefits that that accrues," U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
