John Wick game starring Keanu Reeves unveiled at PlayStation showcase
The billion-dollar action film series John Wick is being turned into a video game, featuring the likeness and voice of star Keanu Reeves. Untitled John Wick Game, as it is currently known, will be made by Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive and include input from film franchise director Chad Stahelsk. A trailer for the game, which is expected to be a prequel to the series, was unveiled at PlayStation's State of Play showcase on Thursday. The Sony event also revealed several remakes of major game franchises, including the God of War trilogy, as well as a 30th anniversary edition of platformer Rayman. The John Wick film franchise, which has earned more than $1bn (£735m) worldwide, follows the story of the retired assassin played by Keanu Reeves on a path of bloody vengeance.

PlayStation's Mark Cerny says a version of FSR 4 could be implemented on the PS5 Pro
AMD just debuted its new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling tech on the latest Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 Ti GPUs, and it sounds like it might not be limited PCs. According to a new Digital Foundry interview with Mark Cerny, some version of FSR 4 will make it into the PlayStation 5 Pro via a software update rather than new hardware. "Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4's upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR," Cerny tells Digital Foundry. The PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a custom upscaling technology that lets the console run lower-resolution versions of games and make them appear like they're 4K, and by Cerny's own lengthy explanation, it was created using a combination of existing and future AMD tech. Based on our review of AMD's new GPUs, FSR 4 is not a miracle worker.
PlayStation's Mark Cerny did a deep-dive on the PS5 Pro and Sony's new partnership with AMD
PlayStation Lead Architect Mark Cerny is back again to explain the nitty-gritty details of how the PlayStation 5 Pro achieves its various graphical improvements. Cerny first introduced the PS5 Pro in September and in a new 37-minute video, he gets into how the Pro's improved GPU uses tech from AMD and announces a "deeper collaboration" between Sony and the chip maker. The PS5 uses AMD's RDNA 2 GPU architecture originally released in 2020, while the PS5 Pro uses what Cerny refers to in the video as RDNA 2.X. The new GPU is a mixture of what was already offered on the PS5, with some cherry-picked features from the more advanced RDNA 3 architecture AMD introduced in 2022. That's paired with ray tracing techniques that Cerny says are from future RDNA tech on AMD's roadmap, and custom machine learning features created for the PS5 Pro.
PlayStation at 30: the console that made video games cool
If you were an obsessive video game fan in the summer of 1994, you'll remember where you were when Edge magazine's August issue dropped. By then, Sony had already announced its intention to develop the PlayStation console – the previous October – but it was the cover feature in the world's most forward-looking game publication that really blew open the possibilities of the machine. As well as listing its specifications in full, Edge secured enthusiastic statements of support from Capcom, Namco and Konami. One breathless developer told the mag: "It's going to revolutionise the way computers are at the moment." Suddenly, the whole structure of the console games business was being threatened. All it needed was a push.

Cyber Monday gaming deals for 2024: The best sales for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PC
Another Black Friday has come and gone, but many of the better gaming deals we saw last week are still kicking. If you're looking to pad out your backlog, pick up a new console or refresh your desktop with new peripherals, we've rounded up a few Cyber Monday gaming deals that are genuinely decent. The selection includes a ton of popular Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC games at their lowest prices to date, 75 off PS5 consoles and several discounts on accessories we've tested and recommended. We've dug through reviews and used price history trackers to ensure each offer below is a genuine deal, and we'll update this post if prices change as the day rolls along. PlayStation 5 (slim) for 424 at Amazon ( 76 off MSRP): This isn't the absolute biggest price drop to date for Sony's console, but larger discounts have been extremely uncommon over the past year. This bundle throws in a few Fortnite skins and V-Bucks; if it runs out of stock, the standalone console is available for the same price. Walmart and Best Buy, meanwhile, have separate bundles that pair the machine with the recent RPG Dragon Age: The Veilguard or one of EA's sports games for 450. Also available at Best Buy, Target, GameStop and PlayStation Direct, among others. PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (slim) NBA 2K25 bundle for 374 at GameStop ( 76 off): If you have no interest in buying physical media, you can save an extra 50 upfront by going with the PS5's disc-less model. This bundle comes with the latest NBA 2K game as a freebie.

Black Friday gaming deals still available for 2024: The best discounts from Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, Meta and others
Black Friday is usually a good time to restock on video games and gaming gear at a discount, and this year has been no exception. If you're looking to pad out your backlog, pick up a new console or refresh your desktop with new peripherals, we rounded up the best Black Friday gaming deals you can still get today. The selection includes a ton of popular Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC games at their lowest prices to date, 75 off PS5 consoles, plus several discounts on accessories we've tested and recommended. If it runs out of stock, you can grab the same Fortnite bundle noted above for the same price. The console alone is 75 off as well. It's a good price either way, though it's difficult to get too excited given that the Digital Edition once sold for 400 before this "slim" revision launched with a 50 price hike.

Shuhei Yoshida is leaving PlayStation in January after three decades
As of January 15, 2025, PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida will leave Sony but not retire from the industry entirely. Yoshida made the announcement while on the PlayStation Podcast Tuesday (a condensed transcription of the interview appears on the official PlayStation blog.) He hasn't provided a reason why he's leaving. Many know Yoshida as Sony Interactive's Head of Indies Initiative, a position he got in 2019. In other words, he's in charge of getting indie games onto PlayStation consoles by networking with indie developers and promoting the games they made.
How Sony could reclaim handheld gaming from Nintendo and the smartphone
A report from Bloomberg this week suggests that Sony is working on a new portable PlayStation device. As someone who still has a PlayStation Vita languishing in my desk drawer because I can't quite bear to put it in the attic, this is an exciting prospect. It has been almost 13 years since Sony released the Vita, its last portable console, and it's such a wonder of a thing, with its big crisp screen and dinky little sticks. I wish more people had made games for it – paper-craft adventure Tearaway and topsy-turvy platform-puzzler Gravity Rush remain underrated. Actually, apart from the lovely and extremely niche Playdate, nobody has bothered to release a dedicated handheld games console in over a decade.
