Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 2024-2025 regular-season and NBA Finals MVP from the Oklahoma City Thunder, somehow upped his game this season. The unstoppable guard, a four-time All-Star and four-time first-team All-NBA honoree, turned in his most efficient season yet, shooting shot 55% from the field, averaging a career-best 6.6 assists per game, and leading the NBA in free throws made per game (7.9), as Oklahoma City again finished with the league's best record. The Canadian's shiftiness and ability to stop on a dime for pull-up jumpers and step-backs helped him frustrate opponents and secure his second straight MVP award.

Weaver: Interweaving SQL and LLM for Table Reasoning
Khoja, Rohit, Gupta, Devanshu, Fu, Yanjie, Roth, Dan, Gupta, Vivek
Querying tables with unstructured data is challenging due to the presence of text (or image), either embedded in the table or in external paragraphs, which traditional SQL struggles to process, especially for tasks requiring semantic reasoning. While Large Language Models (LLMs) excel at understanding context, they face limitations with long input sequences. Existing approaches that combine SQL and LLMs typically rely on rigid, predefined work-flows, limiting their adaptability to complex queries. To address these issues, we introduce Weaver , a modular pipeline that dynamically integrates SQL and LLMs for table-based question answering (TableQA). Weaver generates a flexible, step-by-step plan that combines SQL for structured data retrieval with LLMs for semantic processing. By decomposing complex queries into manageable subtasks, Weaver improves accuracy and generalization. Our experiments show that Weaver consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods across four TableQA datasets, reducing both API calls and error rates. The code, along with other associated scripts, are available at https://coral-lab-asu.github.io/weaver.
Machine learning can level the playing field against match fixing โ helping regulators spot cheating
On the eve of the Rugby World Cup kicking off, there have already been whispers of teams spying on each other. Inevitable gamesmanship, perhaps, but there's no doubt cheating in sport is a problem authorities struggle to combat. Our new machine learning model could be a game changer when it comes to detecting questionable behaviour and unusual outcomes โ especially the practice of match fixing. Currently, the act of altering match outcomes for personal or team gain is largely picked up through abnormalities in sports betting markets. When bookmakers notice unusual odds or changes in the betting line, they alert regulators.

Google upgrades its NBA Pixel Arena app just in time for the playoffs
The NBA's regular season ends in just a couple of weeks, but Google just surprise-dropped a major overhaul of its popular Pixel Arena feature. The original Pixel Arena was advertised as a virtual space for fans to fully experience the NBA, but there wasn't much to do other than play trivia and watch 3D shot recaps. The new Pixel Arena, however, is chock-full of activities for the discerning basketball fan, according to an official blog post. The biggest change is that users can now roam freely around the space, so the emphasis on menu-diving has been reduced in favor of natural exploration. As you roam about the virtual arena, you want to look your best for onlookers, so the avatar creation process has also been significantly overhauled.
How can ChatGPT be the next big thing if it's this broken?
ChatGPT and similar "AI" chatbots are all the rage now within the tech community and industry. As we've previously explained, the chatbot AI can perform a number of tasks, including holding a conversation to writing an entire term paper. Microsoft has started integrating ChatGPT technology into products like Bing, Edge and Teams. Google recently announced its Bard AI chatbot, as did You.com. In fact, certain interactions some folks have had with ChatGPT have been downright frightening. While the technology seems to be relatively benign overall, there have been instances that should raise serious concerns.
