Connected lab: what RPA can do for biopharmaceuticals
The development stage can be one of the most expensive and critical in the life sciences value chain, and is often bogged down in an oversight process that is highly manual and paper based. A clinical-stage study costs an average of $1.1 billion over 6.6 years, according to EY, and so any potential for increasing speed and efficiency in biopharmaceuticals development can have a dramatic impact on the bottom line. Luckily, we're now in the era of the smart connected lab, with robotic process automation (RPA) software deployed to transform the very nature of clinical development. James Ewing, UK regional director of Digital Workforce, says automation is changing pharmaceutical manufacturing in three key ways: streamlining operations through automating high-volume, low-value repetitive tasks, such as comparing datasets; helping researchers increase accuracy when dealing with large quantities of data; and cutting down the administrative tasks associated with regulation. "Given that biopharma research is a heavily regulated industry, there is a large amount of internal documentation which needs to be updated and submitted to external parties. This compliance paperwork process is time consuming, but can be easily automated using RPA," he says.
'Don't be afraid of AI': Daniel Pitchford on how businesses can demystify new technology
"With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the devil." So said Tesla chief and all-round tech titan Elon Musk back in 2014. When someone of his standing makes a statement like that, it should give pause for thought. But according to Daniel Pitchford, co-founder of AI Business, this view, while pretty common, is over-egging the situation slightly. We'll tell you what's true.

Home robots were all over CES, but is Amazon going to rule them all?
At last week's CES (Consumer Electronics Show), the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Centre were teeming with talking robots of all shapes and sizes. There were robots that clean, from ForwardX's autonomous lawnmower and Samsung's Bot Air that travels around a home purifying air to the self-deodorising LavvieBot, a self-cleaning litter box for cats. For dog-lovers, Sony's Aibo robot canine made a return to the annual Las Vegas event. For travellers, the useful Rover Speed and Ovis were on display; both are autonomous robot cases that follow their owners around an airport. Or you could choose to just dump your bags on the back of LG's Cloi CartBot, one of a suite of helpful robots that autonomously navigate, and come equipped with touch displays and voice recognition.
CDOs and CIOs Must Work in Tandem for Successful AI Integration
When the time comes to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) integration in a particular business unit, you'd think the chief information officer (CIO) would be the obvious go-to person -- but it's the chief data officer (CDO) who should be on your radar. AI activity often falls under the care of the CDO because it involves using data, technology and analytics to make informed research and product decisions. There has been steady growth in CDO appointments in the past two years, and the role is coming of age in 2017, according to a recent Forrester report. In 2015, the global average of organizations with a CDO was 45 percent, and increased to 47 percent in 2016, the firm reports. Meanwhile, Gartner estimates by 2019, 90 percent of large organizations will have a CDO.
