For centuries, the term has been used to describe the soft, curly hair forming the fleecy coat of sheep and other animals. It even features prominently in nursery rhymes such as'Baa Baa Black Sheep', sung by children across the UK. But the Oxford English Dictionary's definition must be modernised to include plant-powered varieties that'leave sheep in peace', campaigners say. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) argues that wool derived from linen, hemp and bamboo has existed for centuries.

PETA: Evaluating the Impact of Protein Transfer Learning with Sub-word Tokenization on Downstream Applications

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Large protein language models are adept at capturing the underlying evolutionary information in primary structures, offering significant practical value for protein engineering. Compared to natural language models, protein amino acid sequences have a smaller data volume and a limited combinatorial space. Choosing an appropriate vocabulary size to optimize the pre-trained model is a pivotal issue. Moreover, despite the wealth of benchmarks and studies in the natural language community, there remains a lack of a comprehensive benchmark for systematically evaluating protein language model quality. Given these challenges, PETA trained language models with 14 different vocabulary sizes under three tokenization methods. It conducted thousands of tests on 33 diverse downstream datasets to assess the models' transfer learning capabilities, incorporating two classification heads and three random seeds to mitigate potential biases. Extensive experiments indicate that vocabulary sizes between 50 and 200 optimize the model, whereas sizes exceeding 800 detrimentally affect the model's representational performance. Our code, model weights and datasets are available at https://github.com/ginnm/ProteinPretraining.

PETA rewrites the Bible with the help of ChatGPT to make the Book of Genesis 'vegan' friendly

FOX News

PETA has given the Bible's Book of Genesis a "vegan" makeover, using ChatGPT to recreate the story and "send a can't-be-missed animal rights message filled with vegan teachings." In PETA's vegan version of the Bible, animals are referred to as "beings" rather than "beasts" or "creatures" and plants like hemp and bamboo are used for clothing instead of animal skins because "no one with any fashion or moral sense would wear animal skins in the 21st century." Volunteers serve vegan hot dogs at the PETA Congressional Veggie Dog Lunch outside the Longworth House Office Building July 21, 2021 in Washington, DC. (Win McNamee/Getty Images) "The Bible has long been used to justify all forms of oppression, so we've used ChatGPT to make it clear that a loving God would never endorse exploitation of or cruelty to animals," says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. "It took God only six days to create the entire world, but we realized it would take us years to rewrite the whole Bible, which is why we've started with just the first book." PETA OFFERS TO PAY FOR OSCAR MAYER WIENERMOBILE'S STOLEN CATALYTIC CONVERTER IF IT BECOMES VEGAN MOBILE In Genesis Chapter 22, Abraham travels to the land of Moriah, where instead of slaughtering a ram to demonstrate his faith, he "befriends a gentle lamb to show his reverence and respect for God's creation."

Punxsutawney Phil undergoes "great stress" every year on Groundhog Day and should be replaced by a robot, the leader of PETA says. Ingrid Newkirk writes in a letter to the furry celebrity's Groundhog Club that Phil deserves a break and should be allowed to retire. The request, posted on PETA's website, comes ahead of Sunday's annual ceremony which will determine whether spring arrives early this year.

The Deeper, the Better: Analysis of Person Attributes Recognition

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In person attributes recognition, we describe a person in terms of their appearance. Typically, this includes a wide range of traits including age, gender, clothing, and footwear. Although this could be used in a wide variety of scenarios, it generally is applied to video surveillance, where attribute recognition is impacted by low resolution, and other issues such as variable pose, occlusion and shadow. Recent approaches have used deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to improve the accuracy in person attribute recognition. However, many of these networks are relatively shallow and it is unclear to what extent they use contextual cues to improve classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose deeper methods for person attribute recognition. Interpreting the reasons behind the classification is highly important, as it can provide insight into how the classifier is making decisions. Interpretation suggests that deeper networks generally take more contextual information into consideration, which helps improve classification accuracy and generalizability. We present experimental analysis and results for whole body attributes using the PA-100K and PETA datasets and facial attributes using the CelebA dataset.

Elon Musk Calms Down, and More From Tesla's Shareholder Meeting

WIRED

When Elon Musk was a kid, he had so much trouble managing his time, that his younger brother Kimbal would lie to him about the bus schedule. Elon would show up a few minutes after the supposed arrival--and have just enough time to hop aboard. A few decades on, the whole world knows about Elon's habit of blowing deadlines. And he admits it can be a problem. "This is something I'm trying to get better at," he said from the stage of Silicon Valley's Computer History Museum on Tuesday afternoon, at Tesla's annual shareholders meeting. A few days after a Twitter rage fest aimed at the media, a month after refusing to answer questions about Tesla's financial state during an investors' call, and two months after getting in a public spat with the feds investigating a deadly crash in one of his cars, Musk's attitude when he appeared before his fellow shareholders was conciliatory.

Matthew Morrison's new film outrages PETA after crew member reports animal abuse on set

FOX News

Actor Matthew Morrison arrives at the 42nd American Music Awards in Los Angeles, on Nov. 23, 2014. Matthew Morrison's new film, "Crazy Alien," has been accused of animal abuse on set. During the filming of the Chinese science fiction film, a set member sent PETA a video of a German shepherd allegedly being mistreated while shooting a stunt. The video and an account of the alleged incident by the crew member was made public by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Thursday. "On November 28th, 2017, I witnessed firsthand one of the worst animal cruelty acts I have ever seen," the staffer-turned-whistleblower told PETA, per a log the group released.

tinder-wants-tiger-selfies-removed-dating-app-2574377

International Business Times

The announcement came after animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote a letter to Tinder founder and chairman Sean Rad to explain why photographs of people posing with the big cats is cruel to the majestic animals. Posted just a day before International Tiger Day on July 29, the Tinder blog referred to PETA's appeal to "rid the platform of tiger photos" and said "we could not agree more." In case you don't understand why posing for photographs with tigers or other big cats -- unless it was taken in the wild and the person being photographed somehow survived -- are cruel, here's another excerpt from the PETA letter: "Baby tigers and other animals used at photo attractions are typically torn away from their distraught mothers when they're just days old and then subjected to extreme stress and physical abuse. There are websites and Instagram accounts, such as tigersoftinder and tinderguyswithtigers, that catalog Tinder profiles that have pictures of people posing with the animals.

If you kick a robotic dog, is it wrong?

When pet Lila wasn't getting as much playtime as the other two animals in her Plymouth, Mass., home, owner Genie Boutchia felt guilty. Then when a potential new owner came calling with $850 in hand, Ms. Boutchia felt even guiltier. She changed her mind and deemed Lila not for sale. Such feelings of moral responsibility might seem normal, even admirable, in a dog owner. But Lila is not a real dog.
