PerforatedCNNs: Acceleration through Elimination of Redundant Convolutions

Neural Information Processing Systems

We propose a novel approach to reduce the computational cost of evaluation of convolutional neural networks, a factor that has hindered their deployment in low-power devices such as mobile phones. Inspired by the loop perforation technique from source code optimization, we speed up the bottleneck convolutional layers by skipping their evaluation in some of the spatial positions. We propose and analyze several strategies of choosing these positions. We demonstrate that perforation can accelerate modern convolutional networks such as AlexNet and VGG-16 by a factor of 2x - 4x. Additionally, we show that perforation is complementary to the recently proposed acceleration method of Zhang et al.

Capabilities of GPT-5 on Multimodal Medical Reasoning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have enabled general-purpose systems to perform increasingly complex domain-specific reasoning without extensive fine-tuning. In the medical domain, decision-making often requires integrating heterogeneous information sources, including patient narratives, structured data, and medical images. This study positions GPT-5 as a generalist multimodal reasoner for medical decision support and systematically evaluates its zero-shot chain-of-thought reasoning performance on both text-based question answering and visual question answering tasks under a unified protocol. We benchmark GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, GPT-5-nano, and GPT-4o-2024-11-20 against standardized splits of MedQA, MedXpertQA (text and multimodal), MMLU medical subsets, USMLE self-assessment exams, and VQA-RAD. Results show that GPT-5 consistently outperforms all baselines, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy across all QA benchmarks and delivering substantial gains in multimodal reasoning. On MedXpertQA MM, GPT-5 improves reasoning and understanding scores by +29.26% and +26.18% over GPT-4o, respectively, and surpasses pre-licensed human experts by +24.23% in reasoning and +29.40% in understanding. In contrast, GPT-4o remains below human expert performance in most dimensions. A representative case study demonstrates GPT-5's ability to integrate visual and textual cues into a coherent diagnostic reasoning chain, recommending appropriate high-stakes interventions. Our results show that, on these controlled multimodal reasoning benchmarks, GPT-5 moves from human-comparable to above human-expert performance. This improvement may substantially inform the design of future clinical decision-support systems.

Sumotosima: A Framework and Dataset for Classifying and Summarizing Otoscopic Images

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Otoscopy is a diagnostic procedure to examine the ear canal and eardrum using an otoscope. It identifies conditions like infections, foreign bodies, ear drum perforations and ear abnormalities. We propose a novel resource efficient deep learning and transformer based framework, Sumotosima (Summarizer for otoscopic images), an end-to-end pipeline for classification followed by summarization. Our framework works on combination of triplet and cross-entropy losses. Additionally, we use Knowledge Enhanced Multimodal BART whose input is fused textual and image embedding. The objective is to provide summaries that are well-suited for patients, ensuring clarity and efficiency in understanding otoscopic images. Given the lack of existing datasets, we have curated our own OCASD (Otoscopic Classification And Summary Dataset), which includes 500 images with 5 unique categories annotated with their class and summaries by Otolaryngologists. Sumotosima achieved a result of 98.03%, which is 7.00%, 3.10%, 3.01% higher than K-Nearest Neighbors, Random Forest and Support Vector Machines, respectively, in classification tasks. For summarization, Sumotosima outperformed GPT-4o and LLaVA by 88.53% and 107.57% in ROUGE scores, respectively. We have made our code and dataset publicly available at https://github.com/anas2908/Sumotosima

Domain Adaptation for Industrial Time-series Forecasting via Counterfactual Inference

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Industrial time-series, as a structural data responds to production process information, can be utilized to perform data-driven decision-making for effective monitoring of industrial production process. However, there are some challenges for time-series forecasting in industry, e.g., predicting few-shot caused by data shortage, and decision-confusing caused by unknown treatment policy. To cope with the problems, we propose a novel causal domain adaptation framework, Causal Domain Adaptation (CDA) forecaster to improve the performance on the interested domain with limited data (target). Firstly, we analyze the causality existing along with treatments, and thus ensure the shared causality over time. Subsequently, we propose an answer-based attention mechanism to achieve domain-invariant representation by the shared causality in both domains. Then, a novel domain-adaptation is built to model treatments and outcomes jointly training on source and target domain. The main insights are that our designed answer-based attention mechanism allows the target domain to leverage the existed causality in source time-series even with different treatments, and our forecaster can predict the counterfactual outcome of industrial time-series, meaning a guidance in production process. Compared with commonly baselines, our method on real-world and synthetic oilfield datasets demonstrates the effectiveness in across-domain prediction and the practicality in guiding production process

Bizarre humanoid robot with a face made out of living skin tissue is created by researchers in Japan

Daily Mail - Science & tech

In sci-fi films like Alien, humanoid robots are so lifelike that it's almost impossible to tell them from a real person. Now, scientists in Japan are on their way to creating real-life versions of these realistic machines. The experts from the University of Tokyo have created a robotic face out of lab-grown human skin. Creepy video shows the bizarre pink creation attempting a cheesy smile. According to the scientists, robots with real skin not only have an'increasingly lifelike appearance' but could heal themselves if damaged. In sci-fi films like Alien, humanoid robots are so realistic that it's almost impossible to tell them from a real human - at least until you see their innards.

Hidden Holes: topological aspects of language models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We explore the topology of representation manifolds arising in autoregressive neural language models trained on raw text data. In order to study their properties, we introduce tools from computational algebraic topology, which we use as a basis for a measure of topological complexity, that we call perforation. Using this measure, we study the evolution of topological structure in GPT based large language models across depth and time during training. We then compare these to gated recurrent models, and show that the latter exhibit more topological complexity, with a distinct pattern of changes common to all natural languages but absent from synthetically generated data. The paper presents a detailed analysis of the representation manifolds derived by these models based on studying the shapes of vector clouds induced by them as they are conditioned on sentences from corpora of natural language text. The methods developed in this paper are novel in the field and based on mathematical apparatus that might be unfamiliar to the target audience. To help with that we introduce the minimum necessary theory, and provide additional visualizations in the appendices. The main contribution of the paper is a striking observation about the topological structure of the transformer as compared to LSTM based neural architectures. It suggests that further research into mathematical properties of these neural networks is necessary to understand the operation of large transformer language models. We hope this work inspires further explorations in this direction within the NLP community.

Stochastic approach for elliptic problems in perforated domains

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

A wide range of applications in science and engineering involve a PDE model in a domain with perforations, such as perforated metals or air filters. Solving such perforated domain problems suffers from computational challenges related to resolving the scale imposed by the geometries of perforations. We propose a neural network-based mesh-free approach for perforated domain problems. The method is robust and efficient in capturing various configuration scales, including the averaged macroscopic behavior of the solution that involves a multiscale nature induced by small perforations. The new approach incorporates the derivative-free loss method that uses a stochastic representation or the Feynman-Kac formulation. In particular, we implement the Neumann boundary condition for the derivative-free loss method to handle the interface between the domain and perforations. A suite of stringent numerical tests is provided to support the proposed method's efficacy in handling various perforation scales.

Towards a Next Generation Computing Paradigm: Approximate Computing in Robotics Systems and Environment-Experimentation, Case Study and Practical Implications

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Approximate computing is a computation domain which can be used to trade time and energy with quality and therefore is useful in embedded systems. Energy is the prime resource in battery-driven embedded systems, like robots. Approximate computing can be used as a technique to generate approximate version of the control functionalities of a robot, enabling it to ration energy for computation at the cost of degraded quality. Usually, the programmer of the function specifies the extent of degradation that is safe for the overall safety of the system. However, in a collaborative environment, where several sub-systems co-exist and some of the functionality of each of them have been approximated, the safety of the overall system may be compromised. In this paper, we consider multiple identical robots operate in a warehouse, and the path planning function of the robot is approximated. Although the planned paths are safe for individual robots (i.e. they do not collide with the racks), we show that this leads to a collision among the robots. So, a controlled approximation needs to be carried out in such situations to harness the full power of this new paradigm if it needs to be a mainstream paradigm in future.
