Super Bowl Tailgate Photo Essay: Bad Bunny, Big Tech, and the Big Game
We asked attendees of Super Bowl LX's pregame festivities for their takes on the competing halftime shows, the potential for ICE actions, and the influence of Silicon Valley on the event. To say this year's Super Bowl came at a charged time in American culture and politics is, perhaps, an understatement. While the pair of teams who took the field Sunday--the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots--comprised a pretty classic matchup (no underdogs here!), the rest of the event was set to be anything but. Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium is in the heart of Silicon Valley, just a few miles from the corporate headquarters of Nvidia and AMD, whose chips are powering the AI arms race that had competitors OpenAI and Anthropic sparring via rival Super Bowl ads . There was an explosion in sports "trading" activity on sites like Kalshi and Polymarket in the lead-up to the game, even in states like California where traditional sports betting is illegal. Sunday could prove to be an extraordinary success for prediction markets, as the industry becomes more mainstream . Fresh off a historic Grammy Album of the Year win (a first for a Spanish-language album), the unapologetically political Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny headlined --a choice that sparked a perhaps inevitable MAGA backlash. Meanwhile, Turning Point USA organized an alternative program called The All-American Halftime Show, featuring the likes of Kid Rock and Brantley Gilbert. Never mind that Bad Bunny is Puerto Rican, and therefore an American citizen. Rumors were even buzzing about possible actions by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the Super Bowl. Even though the NFL and California governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that there would be " no immigration enforcement tied to the game," anti-ICE protesters were on the streets. We caught up with football fans at a tailgate five minutes away from Levi's Stadium to hear their thoughts on all the drama. Here's what they had to say.

Millions endure power cuts in Ukraine as Russia strikes more energy sites
Is Trump losing patience with Putin? Will sanctions against Russian oil giants hurt Putin? Most regions of Ukraine are undergoing scheduled power outages amid a new wave of attacks on energy sites by Russian drones and missiles. Ukrenergo, the state-run electricity transmission systems operator in Ukraine, said the blackouts will last at least until the end of Monday as repairs are conducted on infrastructure damaged over the weekend and demand remains high as the onset of winter approaches. According to Ukraine's military, Russian forces used two air-launched ballistic missiles, five surface-to-air guided missiles and 67 drones, including those of Iranian design, during their attacks overnight into Monday. The Ukrainian army did not report shooting down any of the missiles, but it said 52 of the drones were intercepted and the remaining 15 conducted strikes on nine locations.

Will Patriots promised by Trump boost Ukraine's defence against Russia?
Kyiv, Ukraine – Heavy thuds that resemble fast hip-hop beats fill the night air when MIM-104 Patriots, air defence systems made in the United States, get to work. Each Patriot surface-to-air launcher can shoot up to 32 missiles within seconds – and hit Russian ballistic missiles closing in on their targets. The missiles fly at supersonic speeds, and the collision triggers a bright, split-second blast followed by a thunderous shock-wave. "That's the kind of explosion that makes me feel safe," Ihor Lysenko, a 17-year-old in the capital Kyiv told Al Jazeera. He believes that the "technology is pretty reliable".

A panel joins'Fox News @ Night' to weigh in on a voter sentiment poll about the incoming Trump administration, Chinese President Xi Jinping's invitation to the presidential inauguration, and efforts by Trump Cabinet nominees to court senators. President-elect Donald Trump unleashed a slew of nominations on Sunday night, naming several new people to serve in his forthcoming administration. In several Truth Social posts on Sunday, Trump introduced various experts to work in the White House on issues ranging from defense to technology to budgeting. The Republican leader began by naming Stephen Alexander Vaden as his nominee for deputy secretary of the Department of Agriculture. "In my First Term, Stephen was the General Counsel of the Department of Agriculture, and a Member of the Board of the Commodity Credit Corporation, where he won two cases before the United States Supreme Court, relocated and reorganized the Agencies that comprise the Department to better serve Rural America, and engaged in substantial regulatory reform," Trump wrote in a post.

The Logic of Doxastic Strategies
In many real-world situations, there is often not enough information to know that a certain strategy will succeed in achieving the goal, but there is a good reason to believe that it will. The paper introduces the term ``doxastic'' for such strategies. The main technical contribution is a sound and complete logical system that describes the interplay between doxastic strategy and belief modalities.

Ukraine receives US-made Patriot guided missile systems to help shield from Russian airstrikes
Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Ukraine's defense minister said Wednesday his country has received the U.S-made Patriot surface-to-air guided missile systems it has long craved and which Kyiv hopes will help shield it from Russian airstrikes during the war. "Today, our beautiful Ukrainian sky becomes more secure because Patriot air defense systems have arrived in Ukraine," Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said in a tweet. Ukrainian officials have previously said the arrival of Patriot systems, which Washington agreed to send last October, would be a major boost and a milestone in the war against Moscow's full-scale invasion.

A weapon to surpass Metal Gear - Xe Iaso
Every so often, I like to look at some of the more weird conspiracy theories and then try to debunk them. I consider it a media literacy exercise, but there has been one theory that I've come across that is impressively hard to debunk: the "Dead Internet" theory. I think that the best conspiracy theories are the ones that are hardest to debunk, and this one is increasingly getting more difficult to debunk. The core idea is that the Internet itself is actually dead, no human authorship of any content exists. Any actual human content that is created is isolated into its own little heavenbanned bubble. Mainstream platforms, news outlets, social media sites, Internet forums, chatrooms, everything filled with bot generated content to the point that it's impossible to find another human. To be clear, this theory as literally written is absolute nonsense and probably not worth taking too seriously.

Guregian: Patriots pre-training camp 53-man roster projection
The battle for roster spots is about to kick off in earnest for the Patriots with training camp practices set to start Wednesday. Even though the Patriots didn't make a huge splash in free agency this time around, there are still plenty of new faces in the mix fighting for jobs between 2022 draft picks, players acquired in trades as well as the few of note that landed in free agency. Some of the best battles should come in the areas of third-down specialist with James White on the active-PUP list, boundary corner, and outside linebacker opposite Matthew Judon. We'll see how much it changes throughout the course of training camp and the preseason. Analysis: It makes sense to keep the up-and-coming star (Jones), his much-needed mentor (Hoyer), and future backup (Zappe) in the building.

The Age of the Videogame
The history of decision-making has always been intrinsically tied to the history of technology. Charts and compasses have guided explorers for centuries, and a level is an indispensable instrument for construction workers. New tools allow us to make more informed choices which, in turn, may positively impact technological advancements. This dependence suggests that a change in the technological landscape will have implications in how we make decisions. The last half-century has seen one of the most radical revolutions: the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), powered by the ever-increasing data we gather.

Coordinating Narratives and the Capitol Riots on Parler
Ng, Lynnette Hui Xian, Cruickshank, Iain, Carley, Kathleen M.
Coordinated disinformation campaigns are used to influence social media users, potentially leading to offline violence. In this study, we introduce a general methodology to uncover coordinated messaging through analysis of user parleys on Parler. The proposed method constructs a user-to-user coordination network graph induced by a user-to-text graph and a text-to-text similarity graph. The text-to-text graph is constructed based on the textual similarity of Parler posts. We study three influential groups of users in the 6 January 2020 Capitol riots and detect networks of coordinated user clusters that are all posting similar textual content in support of different disinformation narratives related to the U.S. 2020 elections.
