IIT Roorkee Launches MTech Programmes In Artificial Intelligence, Data Science
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has launched two new MTech programs – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) under the recently established Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS). Both the programmes will begin from the 2021-22 academic session, the institute said. As many as 23 faculty members from 15 different departments of the institute have joined the centre as joint faculty members. "These two MTech programs will train human resources with an in-depth knowledge of the tools and techniques necessary to translate data into actionable decisions," IIT Roorkee said. "AI and DS have opened new avenues for research across disciplines and specializations. The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science shall play an important role in shaping the AI and DS landscape of the country by promoting manpower development, research and innovation leading to opportunities for entrepreneurship," said Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee.
IBM Is Using A.I. Algorithms To Unlock The Secrets Of Dark Matter DNA Digital Trends
You may have heard of dark matter, a mysterious form of lesser-studied matter that is thought to be composed of some as-yet undiscovered subatomic particles, but which makes up an astonishing 85% of the matter in the universe. These unexplored molecules and matter surrounding our genes make up more than half of the human genome -- but are a total conundrum in terms of what they encode and, more importantly, affect. The good folks at IBM and the Munich Leukemia Laboratory think they can help come up with some answers -- and they've used some groundbreaking A.I. algorithms to help. "Despite it making up a large portion of our genome, dark matter DNA has been ignored, as most scientists believe it plays no role," Laxmi Parida, IBM Research Fellow in Computational Genomics, told Digital Trends. "At IBM Research, we thought there might be more to dark matter DNA than we have been led to believe."
The AI program that can tell whether you may go blind
Dr Ramasamy Kim is looking at the inside of an eyeball. There is nothing particularly surprising about that: he is head of retina services at an eye hospital in southern India. The image on his computer screen shows the first blush of a condition linked to diabetes that affects millions of Indians – and can lead to blindness. The diagnosis was made not by him, or any other doctor, but by an algorithm. Over the past five years, Kim and his team at the Aravind eye hospital in Madurai have examined about 15,000 images from across the country showing the interior surface of the eyeball, known as the fundus.
