The cameras combine with software that serves as the brains behind the vehicles' eyes. CEO Elon Musk said on the company's first-quarter earnings conference call in late April that the shift to an all-optical system, and developing its neural-network processing software, were critical elements to allowing cars to safely drive themselves in any setting.
