A brief history of Sam Altman's hype
Here's how pinning a utopian vision for AI on LLMs kicked off the hype cycle that's causing fears of a bubble today. Each time you've heard a borderline outlandish idea of what AI will be capable of, it often turns out that Sam Altman was, if not the first to articulate it, at least the most persuasive and influential voice behind it. For more than a decade he has been known in Silicon Valley as a world-class fundraiser and persuader. OpenAI's early releases around 2020 set the stage for a mania around large language models, and the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 granted Altman a world stage on which to present his new thesis: that these models mirror human intelligence and could swing the doors open to a healthier and wealthier techno-utopia. Throughout, Altman's words have set the agenda. He has framed a prospective superintelligent AI as either humanistic or catastrophic, depending on what effect he was hoping to create, what he was raising money for, or which tech giant seemed like his most formidable competitor at the moment.

UK will be second-fastest-growing G7 economy, IMF predicts
The UK is forecast to be the second-fastest growing of the world's most advanced economies this year and next, according to new projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The rates of growth remain modest at 1.3% for both years, but that outperforms the other G7 economies apart from the US, in a torrid year of trade and geopolitical tensions. However, UK inflation is set to rise to the highest in the G7 in 2025 and 2026, the IMF predicts, driven by larger energy and utility bills. UK inflation is forecast to average 3.4% this year and 2.5% in 2026 but the IMF says this will be temporary, and fall to 2% by the end of next year. The G7 are seven advanced economies - the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan - but the group doesn't include fast-growing economies such as China and India.

ChatGPT can now access Gmail, Outlook, and Google Drive in real time
Earlier this week, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT can now be connected to more apps and services, allowing you to pull your data from those sources in real time. Newly connectable sources that were explicitly mentioned include Outlook, Teams, Google Drive, Gmail, and Linear. ChatGPT can now connect to more internal sources & pull in real-time context--keeping existing user-level permissions. These new connections are only available for paid ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users. Furthermore, the feature is excluded for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and UK.

GOP lawmaker credits Trump for relieving his constituents on key issue after being 'demonized'
Secretary of Energy Chris Wright discusses the economic impact of lowering energy prices, why energy is essential for artificial intelligence dominance, American LNG exports and possible U.S. operation of Ukrainian nuclear plants. Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, said that his constituents are feeling optimistic once again about the future of the oil and gas industry in his district and beyond. The Republican represents parts of central Texas that are critical to the industry, including the Permian Basin, as the Trump administration has famously promised to "drill, baby, drill." "Think about the hardworking men and women of the Permian Basin, or the Bakken or the Marcellus, or any other producing area. President Biden said, 'What you do is evil. You producing oil and gas is evil.' I mean, they basically demonized them," he told Fox News Digital in a recent interview.

'Less Star Wars – more Blade Runner': the making of Mass Effect 2's Bafta-nominated soundtrack
Mass Effect is some of the best science fiction ever made. That may sound like a grandiose comment, but it's true. As a trilogy, the original games from 2007-2013 effortlessly plucked the most cerebral ideas from the sci-fi genre and slotted them into a memorable military role-playing game that had players invested from beginning to controversial end. Whether you prefer the hopeful, optimistic outlook of Asimov, the dark and reflective commentary of Shelley, the accessible thought experiments of Star Trek, or the arch melodrama of Battlestar Galactica, Mass Effect has it all. The trilogy is as happy grazing on the western-inspired tropes of Star Wars as the "hard" sci-fi of Iain M Banks, blending all its moods and micro-stories into a compelling, believable galaxy that somehow walks a line between breathless optimism and suffocating bleakness.
Microsoft Outlook gets dynamic AI themes that change throughout the day
Microsoft is getting a new feature called "Themes by Copilot," which adds the ability to use dynamic AI-driven themes in Microsoft Outlook. You'll need a Copilot Pro subscription to start using it, and it's just one of the many ways AI can benefit your M365 workflows. Related: What can Copilot Pro do for users? Themes by Copilot allows you to specify the types of themes you want to use in Outlook, which are then auto-generated by Microsoft's Copilot generative AI tool. Theme designs can be based on location or weather, and the aesthetics can be in realistic, oil painting, or cartoon styles.
Microsoft confirms a CYBERATTACK was behind the latest outage that saw Outlook, Xbox, and Minecraft taken out for almost 10 hours
Microsoft has confirmed that its latest global outage was caused by a malicious cyberattack. The outage saw Outlook email services, Xbox Live, and even Minecraft go down for almost 10 hours yesterday afternoon - just two weeks after millions were affected by global outages. Microsoft now admits that its services were taken out by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack which was'amplified' by an error in the company's cyber defences. Experts say the true culprits may never be identified but that they were likely encouraged to strike by Microsoft's recent service troubles. Sylvain Cortes, vice president of strategy at cybersecurity firm Hackuity, told MailOnline: 'Rogue actors, cybergangs, and nation-states alike leverage these tactics, so further investigation is required to determine the origin of the threat.'

Synthetic Cancer -- Augmenting Worms with LLMs
Zimmerman, Benjamin, Zollikofer, David
With increasingly sophisticated large language models (LLMs), the potential for abuse rises drastically. As a submission to the Swiss AI Safety Prize, we present a novel type of metamorphic malware leveraging LLMs for two key processes. First, LLMs are used for automatic code rewriting to evade signature-based detection by antimalware programs. The malware then spreads its copies via email by utilizing an LLM to socially engineer email replies to encourage recipients to execute the attached malware. Our submission includes a functional minimal prototype, highlighting the risks that LLMs pose for cybersecurity and underscoring the need for further research into intelligent malware.

Social Bias in Large Language Models For Bangla: An Empirical Study on Gender and Religious Bias
Sadhu, Jayanta, Saha, Maneesha Rani, Shahriyar, Rifat
The rapid growth of Large Language Models (LLMs) has put forward the study of biases as a crucial field. It is important to assess the influence of different types of biases embedded in LLMs to ensure fair use in sensitive fields. Although there have been extensive works on bias assessment in English, such efforts are rare and scarce for a major language like Bangla. In this work, we examine two types of social biases in LLM generated outputs for Bangla language. Our main contributions in this work are: (1) bias studies on two different social biases for Bangla (2) a curated dataset for bias measurement benchmarking (3) two different probing techniques for bias detection in the context of Bangla. This is the first work of such kind involving bias assessment of LLMs for Bangla to the best of our knowledge. All our code and resources are publicly available for the progress of bias related research in Bangla NLP.
