CES 2026: The audio gear we want to chase, carry, and crank

Popular Science

We're in Las Vegas with two ears and a heart, on the search for the best in immersive open earbuds, portable Bluetooth speakers, powered stereo setups, and more. We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. When it comes to audio systems at CES, held January 6-9 in Las Vegas, we always hope to find new ways companies have found to make music feel bigger without making your life harder. Sometimes that means earbuds you pull out of your pocket to pull previously unheard details out of tracks. Sometimes that means a wireless headset that considers limited bandwidth a personal insult.

Onkyo's high-end receivers will link up with Sonos

Engadget

Some Onkyo receivers are getting the Work with Sonos seal of approval -- you'll soon be able to stream tunes from the Sonos app to Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer Elite receivers. You can add Onkyo devices to an existing Sonos setup as well, which might come in handy for a multi-room setup. Some Onkyo systems already have Google Assistant support via Google Home, and the Sonos tie-up will similarly add limited Alexa controls through Amazon's Echo hardware, the company told Twice. It's a positive move for Onkyo owners who might want to combine their systems with Sonos speakers into a more streamlined setup. Onkyo will reveal the specific models involved on June 6th, when the firmware update is scheduled to drop.

The guts of Onkyo's SBT-A500 sound bar come in an external box to give the speaker an ultra-low profile

PCWorld

Onkyo says the SBT-A500 Network Surround Soundbar it announced at CES last week is designed for gamers, music lovers, and movie enthusiasts looking for a low-profile, networkable speaker system that supports all the most popular music-streaming services and that can be incorporated into a mutli-room audio system. The SBT-A500 is just 2.1 inches high, so it won't creep into your TV's field of view if your gear is installed in an entertainment center. The low profile is possible because the amplifier, I/O ports, and other electronics are housed in an external box that connects to the speaker with a single umbilical cable. A wireless subwoofer delivers low-frequency effects. The slim A/V receiver houses an amplifier, network adapter, and audio processor, along with four HDMI inputs for source devices such as a media streamer and a game console.
