Gear News of the Week: Samsung's Trifold Promise, Ikea's Sonos Split, and Hugging Face's New Robot

WIRED

Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event in Brooklyn earlier this week debuted seven new devices, from the Galaxy Z Fold7 to the Galaxy Watch8 series. But there weren't any surprises at the end, despite rumors that Samsung would unveil a trifold phone. Sensing disappointment, the company later confirmed that the phone is expected to land in 2025. "I expect we will be able to launch the trifold phone within this year," TM Roh, head of Samsung's mobile business, told The Korea Times. The trifold phone, rumored to be called the Galaxy G Fold, would have a normal screen on the front and two hinges that let you open it up as a tablet-sized screen.

OnePlus 13 review: A focused flagship that ignores the AI hype

Engadget

OnePlus has been a bit up and down since it merged with Oppo back in 2021. It gained greater access to powerful components and partnerships with brands like Hasselblad, while its software and product lineup took a few steps back before finding its stride again. But now, three generations after the merger, OnePlus' latest flagship phone -- the OnePlus 13 -- feels like a fantastic return to form. In some areas, the company is even pushing the limits of hardware and gadget design in ways that rivals from Samsung and Google aren't. And with a starting price of 900, OnePlus has managed to undercut its closest competitor too, which makes this phone a great choice for anyone who cares more about getting hardware upgrades than fancy new AI tricks.

The Morning After: OnePlus' thinner, more affordable flagship foldable

Engadget

Compared to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5, not only does OnePlus' first foldable pack two larger displays, it's also thinner and lighter -- as long as you don't count the hulking camera module. The most impressive thing the Open is doing is putting pressure on the price of big foldables. Starting at $1,700, it costs $100 less than the Z Fold 5 and Google's Pixel Fold -- and that's before you factor in the launch deal that knocks another $200 off with the trade-in of any phone. We put it through its paces in our full review. You can get these reports delivered daily direct to your inbox.

The OnePlus 6T will have a feature the iPhone XS and Pixel 3 won't: an in-display fingerprint reader

PCWorld

With rumors swirling about Apple's new iPhone XS (landing Wednesday) and Google's Pixel 3 (coming October 9), it's easy to forget that there are other phones arriving this fall. And to make sure it isn't ignored, OnePlus is teasing a huge feature in its next phone. In an interview with CNET, a OnePlus representative divulged that the upcoming 6T will have a feature called Screen Unlock, bringing the fabled in-display fingerprint to the most mainstream phone yet. "By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face Unlock," OnePlus said, "users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them." CNet also reports that the hardware fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone will be removed, giving it a "more unibody look," and the phone will be about a half-millimeter thicker to accommodate the new tech.

OnePlus 5T launch: 'all-screen' experience at half price of iPhone X

The Guardian

The latest Android smartphone from Chinese upstart OnePlus hopes to tempt users looking for the new all-screen experience, but at less than half the price of an iPhone X. The 5T is a revamped version of the 5 launched in June and marks the second time the company has updated its smartphone line more than once in a year. According to co-founder Carl Pei, this is because "when we've got new technology ready to go we don't want to leave our users with older devices". Launched in New York, the 5T is essentially a OnePlus 5 on the inside, with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, memory and storage options, fast-charging system and Oxygen OS software based on last year's Android 7.1.1, It even costs the same, priced at £449, undercutting rivals by at least several hundred pounds. But the 1080p AMOLED screen has been stretched to the now popular 18:9 ratio, filling the front of the display with thin bezels at the top, bottom and sides.
