Probing Association Biases in LLM Moderation Over-Sensitivity

Large Language Models are widely used for content moderation but often misclassify benign comments as toxic, leading to over-sensitivity. While previous research attributes this issue primarily to the presence of offensive terms, we reveal a potential cause beyond token level: LLMs exhibit systematic topic biases in their implicit associations. Inspired by cognitive psychology's implicit association tests, we introduce Topic Association Analysis, a semantic-level approach to quantify how LLMs associate certain topics with toxicity. By prompting LLMs to generate free-form scenario imagination for misclassified benign comments and analyzing their topic amplification levels, we find that more advanced models (e.g., GPT-4 Turbo) demonstrate stronger topic stereotype despite lower overall false positive rates. These biases suggest that LLMs do not merely react to explicit, offensive language but rely on learned topic associations, shaping their moderation decisions. Our findings highlight the need for refinement beyond keyword-based filtering, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms driving LLM over-sensitivity.

Is this the world's ultimate swear word? Mathematician uses algorithm to create new offensive term

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A mathematician has created an entirely new curse word based on a list of 186 offensive terms - and she said it is'the world's ultimate swear word. Sophie Maclean, a student at Kings College London, found'banger' is the supreme offensive term or'ber' for short. The researcher fed a list of popular'bad words' to a computer model, which then found the supreme word begins with the letter'b,' has four letters and ends in '-er.' Mclean found that when no inputs were given, the model made up words like'ditwat.' Most people have their favorite curse word, but a mathematician used their coding skills to create a new one deemed the world's ultimate swear word Maclean told BBC Science Focus: 'I think neither is as satisfying as a'f*ck' when you've stubbed your toe, or a'sh*t' when you realize you've forgotten your parent's birthday. But both feel like they could be quite good insults for people.'

How Google's search algorithm spreads false information with a rightwing bias

The Guardian

Google's search algorithm appears to be systematically promoting information that is either false or slanted with an extreme rightwing bias on subjects as varied as climate change and homosexuality. Following a recent investigation by the Observer, which uncovered that Google's search engine prominently suggests neo-Nazi websites and antisemitic writing, the Guardian has uncovered a dozen additional examples of biased search results. Google's search algorithm and its autocomplete function prioritize websites that, for example, declare that climate change is a hoax, being gay is a sin, and the Sandy Hook mass shooting never happened. The increased scrutiny on the algorithms of Google – which removed antisemitic and sexist autocomplete phrases after the recent Observer investigation – comes at a time of tense debate surrounding the role of fake news in building support for conservative political leaders, particularly US President-elect Donald Trump. Facebook has faced significant backlash for its role in enabling widespread dissemination of misinformation, and data scientists and communication experts have argued that rightwing groups have found creative ways to manipulate social media trends and search algorithms.
