Microsoft adds more AI features to Notepad in latest preview update

PCWorld

PCWorld reports that Microsoft's latest Windows 11 preview update brings AI text generation and improvement tools to Notepad, similar to chatbot functionality. The update also expands Markdown support for easier formatting and adds AI-generated coloring book pages plus a smarter Fill tool to Paint. These AI features remain optional and can be disabled in settings, requiring a Microsoft account for users who choose to enable them. Microsoft has released a preview update for Windows 11 Insiders that adds AI features and easier formatting options to Notepad. The otherwise stripped-down text editor has also been given a new welcome screen that describes the app as "the essential text editor, enhanced."

Microsoft continues to build out Copilot AI support in Notepad for Windows 11. The latest update introduces so-called "streaming" in the minimalist text editor, reports Windows Latest . Instead, here's what it means: you can now watch Copilot write out its AI-generated text letter by letter, similar to how it works on ChatGPT and other AI chatbots.

Some paid AI features in Notepad are going free for Copilot PC users

Windows 11 Notepad gets improved context menus in latest update

PCWorld

Ever since Microsoft killed WordPad in 2024, the much-simpler Notepad app has been receiving several new features--almost as if it's evolving into a better, more modern version of WordPad. Meanwhile, Microsoft is introducing an even simpler text editor called Edit. Some of the recent additions to Notepad include spell check, AI-generated text, and Markdown formatting--and the improvements aren't done yet. The latest news is that Notepad will soon have updated context menus in Windows 11, reports Neowin. In Notepad version 11.2507.26.0, which is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders, the updated context menu now matches the look of Windows 11 24H2's context menus, with quick actions for Copy, Cut, Paste, Select all, and Delete, plus other actions like Write, Rewrite, Summarize, Define with Bing, and more.

Microsoft is now testing AI-generated text in Windows Notepad

PCWorld

As of yesterday, Microsoft has begun rolling out a new update to Windows 11 Insiders on the Dev and Canary Channels. This update brings new AI features to Notepad, Paint, and the Snipping Tool. Notepad now has the ability to write text from scratch using generative AI, which is meant to aid you by quickly producing drafts based on your prompts and instructions. To use AI text generation, simply right-click anywhere in the document and select Write. Type in your instructions, then either click Keep Text or Discard on the results.

I told Windows Notepad's new AI to turn Nvidia's fail into poetry

PCWorld

Windows 11 has quietly added a new feature to your PC: AI-powered editing to the Windows 11 Notepad app, called Rewrite. In November, Microsoft began testing the addition of AI rewrite capabilities in Notepad, and then developed it further as part of a February update. Now, Windows Latest has reported that the AI-powered Notepad appears to have rolled out to everyone. It has certainly shown up on my PCs, whether they're running the stable version of Windows or one of its test Insider editions. In the upper right-hand corner of Notepad, you should see a little "magic pen" icon. You may not see it if you don't subscribe to Microsoft 365, as those AI capabilities appear to be part of Microsoft's productivity subscription.

New AI experiences make their way into Windows 11's Paint, Notepad

PCWorld

In October, Microsoft unveiled a roadmap for next-generation AI experiences within Windows 11. Today, two of those -- in Paint and Notepad -- begin rolling out to testers. Microsoft's October AI roadmap included tweaks to Paint, Notepad, and Search. Microsoft Recall was expected soon, too. Recall, of course, has been delayed again until December, as Microsoft works to ensure it's secure and private.

"Set It Up!": Functional Object Arrangement with Compositional Generative Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper studies the challenge of developing robots capable of understanding under-specified instructions for creating functional object arrangements, such as "set up a dining table for two"; previous arrangement approaches have focused on much more explicit instructions, such as "put object A on the table." We introduce a framework, SetItUp, for learning to interpret under-specified instructions. SetItUp takes a small number of training examples and a human-crafted program sketch to uncover arrangement rules for specific scene types. By leveraging an intermediate graph-like representation of abstract spatial relationships among objects, SetItUp decomposes the arrangement problem into two subproblems: i) learning the arrangement patterns from limited data and ii) grounding these abstract relationships into object poses. SetItUp leverages large language models (LLMs) to propose the abstract spatial relationships among objects in novel scenes as the constraints to be satisfied; then, it composes a library of diffusion models associated with these abstract relationships to find object poses that satisfy the constraints. We validate our framework on a dataset comprising study desks, dining tables, and coffee tables, with the results showing superior performance in generating physically plausible, functional, and aesthetically pleasing object arrangements compared to existing models.

Pickpook: The Unseen Edu & Travels: Microsoft Integrates AI Into Windows 11, User Can Talk Directly To ChatGPT On The Taskbar

Microsoft is one of the companies that has ambitions to bring ChatGPT to its products to change the way the world interacts with AI. Microsoft is the first company to invest $10 billion in ChatGPT to integrate it with its Bing search engine. In addition to integrating ChatGPT into Bing and Edge, Microsoft has been ahead of the competition when it announced that it will integrate Bing ChatGPT into the Windows 11 operating system in the next updates. Specifically, Microsoft unveiled the first major Windows 11 update for 2023, bringing with it a number of new features and changes designed to enhance the Windows 11 user experience. The update is starting to roll out.

12 Things I Learned During My First Year as a Machine Learning Engineer

Then I'd sit down, look at my notes from the previous day and open up Slack. I'd read the messages and open up any links to papers or blog posts the team had shared, there'd be a few, this field moves fast. Once the messages were cleared, I'd skim through the papers and blog posts and read the ones which stuck. Usually there was something which may have helped with what I was working on. Reading took up to an hour, sometimes more, depending on what it was. Reading is the ultimate meta-skill, if there was a better way of doing what I was doing, I could save time and effort by learning it and implementing it.
