A Fast Heuristic Search Approach for Energy-Optimal Profile Routing for Electric Vehicles
We study the energy-optimal shortest path problem for electric vehicles (EVs) in large-scale road networks, where recuperated energy along downhill segments introduces negative energy costs. While traditional point-to-point pathfinding algorithms for EVs assume a known initial energy level, many real-world scenarios involving uncertainty in available energy require planning optimal paths for all possible initial energy levels, a task known as energy-optimal profile search. Existing solutions typically rely on specialized profile-merging procedures within a label-correcting framework that results in searching over complex profiles. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective label-setting approach based on multi-objective A* search, which employs a novel profile dominance rule to avoid generating and handling complex profiles. We develop four variants of our method and evaluate them on real-world road networks enriched with realistic energy consumption data. Experimental results demonstrate that our energy profile A* search achieves performance comparable to energy-optimal A* with a known initial energy level.
Learning In Chaos: Efficient Autoscaling and Self-Healing for Multi-Party Distributed Training

Node and link churn in multi-party, cross-region clusters over wide-area networks (WANs) often disrupts distributed training. However, checkpoint-based recovery and cloud-centric autoscaling react slowly and assume centralized control, which is misaligned with the self-governed setup where institutions can freely join and leave. This paper proposes Chaos, a multi-party distributed training system with self-healing and autoscaling, enabling robust and elastic training under churn. It speeds up autoscaling via multi-neighbor state replication and model sharding. We formalize the sharding and assignment as a MINLP that captures WAN heterogeneity, and reduce it to a tractable MILP by analyzing its monotonicity on a divisibility chain. By establishing an equivalence, we derive a greedy algorithm that follows optimality rules and yields the optimal solution in polynomial time. Chaos uses a cluster monitor to track resource and topology changes, and handles scaling events through peer negotiation protocols, enabling fully self-governed autoscaling among institutions. Experiments show that Chaos has substantially lower scale-out delay than Pollux, Elan, and Autoscaling, and handles scale-in, connect-link, and disconnect-link events within 20ms. It also delivers the lowest idle time, showing superior resource use and scalability as the cluster grows.
Thought Space Explorer: Navigating and Expanding Thought Space for Large Language Model Reasoning

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated their potential in handling complex reasoning tasks, which are usually achieved by constructing a thought chain to guide the model to solve the problem with multi-step thinking. However, existing methods often remain confined to previously explored solution spaces and thus overlook the critical blind spot within LLMs' cognitive range. To address these issues, we design the Thought Space Explorer (TSE), a novel framework to expand and optimize thought structures to guide LLMs to explore their blind spots of thinking. By generating new reasoning steps and branches based on the original thought structure with various designed strategies, TSE broadens the thought space and alleviates the impact of blind spots for LLM reasoning. Experimental results on multiple levels of reasoning tasks demonstrate the efficacy of TSE. We also conduct extensive analysis to understand how structured and expansive thought can contribute to unleashing the potential of LLM reasoning capabilities.
Learning-accelerated A* Search for Risk-aware Path Planning

Safety is a critical concern for urban flights of autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In populated environments, risk should be accounted for to produce an effective and safe path, known as risk-aware path planning. Risk-aware path planning can be modeled as a Constrained Shortest Path (CSP) problem, aiming to identify the shortest possible route that adheres to specified safety thresholds. CSP is NP-hard and poses significant computational challenges. Although many traditional methods can solve it accurately, all of them are very slow. Our method introduces an additional safety dimension to the traditional A* (called ASD A*), enabling A* to handle CSP. Furthermore, we develop a custom learning-based heuristic using transformer-based neural networks, which significantly reduces the computational load and improves the performance of the ASD A* algorithm. The proposed method is well-validated with both random and realistic simulation scenarios.
Online Learning Of Expanding Graphs

This paper addresses the problem of online network topology inference for expanding graphs from a stream of spatiotemporal signals. Online algorithms for dynamic graph learning are crucial in delay-sensitive applications or when changes in topology occur rapidly. While existing works focus on inferring the connectivity within a fixed set of nodes, in practice, the graph can grow as new nodes join the network. This poses additional challenges like modeling temporal dynamics involving signals and graphs of different sizes. This growth also increases the computational complexity of the learning process, which may become prohibitive. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to tackle this setting. We propose a general online algorithm based on projected proximal gradient descent that accounts for the increasing graph size at each iteration. Recursively updating the sample covariance matrix is a key aspect of our approach. We introduce a strategy that enables different types of updates for nodes that just joined the network and for previously existing nodes. To provide further insights into the proposed method, we specialize it in Gaussian Markov random field settings, where we analyze the computational complexity and characterize the dynamic cumulative regret. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach using both controlled experiments and real-world datasets from epidemic and financial networks.
Automated Cinematography Motion Planning for UAVs

This project aimed to develop an automated cinematography platform using an unmanned aerial vehicle. Quadcopters are a great platform for shooting aerial scenes but are difficult to maneuver smoothly and can require expertise to pilot. We aim to design an algorithm to enable automated cinematography of a desired object of interest. Given the location of an object and other obstacles in the environment, the drone is able to plan its trajectory while simultaneously keeping the desired object in the video frame and avoiding obstacles. The high maneuverability of quadcopter platforms coupled with the desire for smooth movement and stability from camera platforms means a robust motion planning algorithm must be developed which can take advantage of the quadcopter's abilities while creating motion paths which satisfy the ultimate goal of capturing aerial video. This project aims to research, develop, simulate, and test such an algorithm.
STROOBnet Optimization via GPU-Accelerated Proximal Recurrence Strategies

Spatiotemporal networks' observational capabilities are crucial for accurate data gathering and informed decisions across multiple sectors. This study focuses on the Spatiotemporal Ranged Observer-Observable Bipartite Network (STROOBnet), linking observational nodes (e.g., surveillance cameras) to events within defined geographical regions, enabling efficient monitoring. Using data from Real-Time Crime Camera (RTCC) systems and Calls for Service (CFS) in New Orleans, where RTCC combats rising crime amidst reduced police presence, we address the network's initial observational imbalances. Aiming for uniform observational efficacy, we propose the Proximal Recurrence approach. It outperformed traditional clustering methods like k-means and DBSCAN by offering holistic event frequency and spatial consideration, enhancing observational coverage.
Dynamic Link Prediction for New Nodes in Temporal Graph Networks

Modelling temporal networks for dynamic link prediction of new nodes has many real-world applications, such as providing relevant item recommendations to new customers in recommender systems and suggesting appropriate posts to new users on social platforms. Unlike old nodes, new nodes have few historical links, which poses a challenge for the dynamic link prediction task. Most existing dynamic models treat all nodes equally and are not specialized for new nodes, resulting in suboptimal performances. In this paper, we consider dynamic link prediction of new nodes as a few-shot problem and propose a novel model based on the meta-learning principle to effectively mitigate this problem. Specifically, we develop a temporal encoder with a node-level span memory to obtain a new node embedding, and then we use a predictor to determine whether the new node generates a link. To overcome the few-shot challenge, we incorporate the encoder-predictor into the meta-learning paradigm, which can learn two types of implicit information during the formation of the temporal network through span adaptation and node adaptation. The acquired implicit information can serve as model initialisation and facilitate rapid adaptation to new nodes through a fine-tuning process on just a few links. Experiments on three publicly available datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our model compared to existing state-of-the-art methods.
Combinative Cumulative Knowledge Processes

We analyze Cumulative Knowledge Processes, introduced by Ben-Eliezer, Mikulincer, Mossel, and Sudan (ITCS 2023), in the setting of "directed acyclic graphs", i.e., when new units of knowledge may be derived by combining multiple previous units of knowledge. The main considerations in this model are the role of errors (when new units may be erroneous) and local checking (where a few antecedent units of knowledge are checked when a new unit of knowledge is discovered). The aforementioned work defined this model but only analyzed an idealized and simplified "tree-like" setting, i.e., a setting where new units of knowledge only depended directly on one previously generated unit of knowledge. The main goal of our work is to understand when the general process is safe, i.e., when the effect of errors remains under control. We provide some necessary and some sufficient conditions for safety. As in the earlier work, we demonstrate that the frequency of checking as well as the depth of the checks play a crucial role in determining safety. A key new parameter in the current work is the $\textit{combination factor}$ which is the distribution of the number of units $M$ of old knowledge that a new unit of knowledge depends on. Our results indicate that a large combination factor can compensate for a small depth of checking. The dependency of the safety on the combination factor is far from trivial. Indeed some of our main results are stated in terms of $\mathbb{E}\{1/M\}$ while others depend on $\mathbb{E}\{M\}$.
Path and trajectory planning of a tethered UAV-UGV marsupial robotic system

This letter addresses the problem of trajectory planning in a marsupial robotic system consisting of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) linked to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) through a non-taut tether with controllable length. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that addresses the trajectory planning of a marsupial UGV-UAV with a non-taut tether. The objective is to determine a synchronized collision-free trajectory for the three marsupial system agents: UAV, UGV, and tether. First, we present a path planning solution based on optimal Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRT*) with novel sampling and steering techniques to speed-up the computation. This algorithm is able to obtain collision-free paths for the UAV and the UGV, taking into account the 3D environment and the tether. Then, the letter presents a trajectory planner based on non-linear least squares. The optimizer takes into account aspects not considered in the path planning, like temporal constraints of the motion imposed by limits on the velocities and accelerations of the robots, or raising the tether's clearance. Simulated and field test results demonstrate that the approach generates obstacle-free, smooth, and feasible trajectories for the marsupial system.
