WIRED

One of Meta's Offices Was Briefly Overtaken by a Rogue Squirrel The animal escaped after apparently arriving inside a package at Meta's Bangkok office, injuring one employee before finally being caught. Meta's year so far hasn't exactly been a picnic. A squirrel apparently got loose inside a building in Bangkok, Thailand, where some of the tech giant's regional teams are based. The critter spent at least 20 minutes darting past staff, according to an internal memo seen by WIRED. It noted that the squirrel minorly injured a janitor before finally being caught.

Duer's Wear-Everywhere Pants Are on Sale This Weekend

WIRED

It's a rare chance to save on the outdoor-coded Canadian company's understated and stylish performance clothing. Now that Amazon Prime Day is over, it's time to start gearing up for Fourth of July sales. Most large retailers pivoted their summer-sale timing to compete head-on with Amazon's accelerated schedule, but you can still snag great deals this July 4th, particularly in active and outdoorsy categories. REI has the hottest sale of the weekend as far as the WIRED Reviews team is concerned, but there are notable midsummer sales on other sites we shop, like Backcountry, Home Depot, and Lululemon . Also, make sure you don't sleep on Duer.

How to See the Giant Asteroid That Will Pass by Earth This Weekend

WIRED

The asteroid will be visible for several nights from different parts of the world. We'll tell you when and where to look, and what equipment you'll need to spot it. The European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed that this weekend, asteroid (152637) 1997 NC1 will make its closest approach to Earth in 400 years. There's no risk it will hit Earth, but it will be visible through commercial telescopes and astronomical binoculars from various parts of the world. The closest approach will occur on Saturday, June 27, when the asteroid will pass 2.56 million kilometers (1.59 million miles) from Earth--a distance equivalent to 6.6 times the distance between Earth and the moon.

The Aerogarden I Recommend to Everyone Is Just 83 Right Now, a 63 Percent Discount

WIRED

The premium Aerogarden Bounty is 63 percent off for Prime Day--a rare chance to buy one of our favorite hydroponic gardens for less than $100. I'm not sure whether this is an error or a last-minute clearance, but I'm not questioning it: Aerogarden's high-end Bounty model, which usually retails for $220 or more, has just been marked down 63 percent, to $84. Even though I already have one, this is still such a good deal that I'm buying another as a gift. When someone brand new to hydroponic gardening asks me which system they should start with, I almost always tell them to begin with an Aerogarden. These gardens have been around forever, and they're famously foolproof and easy to maintain--just add water and nutrients every couple of weeks. No futzing with pH or total dissolved solids or pipes and hoses.

Keychron K2 HE Concrete Edition Review: Rock-Solid Typing

WIRED

Keychron's K2 HE Concrete Edition sounds like a cute gimmick, but as I discovered, there's a really solid keyboard beyond the absurd choice of materials. Concrete case has significant tradeoffs in weight and practicality. In-browser customization requires physical connection. Yes, Keychron made a . The cause of scraped knees, bike-tire skid marks, and finger-painted signatures is now the foundation of a keyboard.

A Dating App Is Giving Away Free Gas to Convince People to Get Out of the House

WIRED

Amid ongoing economic anxieties, BLK and other companies are giving away basic essentials to appeal to the public. While Gen Z catches a lot of flack for being single, or even antisocial, there's a brutal economic reality underscoring why some people aren't going out: They simply don't have the disposable income . Dating apps, already struggling to maintain user bases due to enshittification and a lack of quality matches, are contending with this affordability crisis. In a dystopian sign of the times, BLK, the app for Black singles, announced on Wednesday that it is giving away free gas in an attempt to incentivize people to go on dates. As part of the promotion, BLK is providing $500 gas gift cards to 10 people who download the app and tag three friends in the campaign post across its social channels.

There's New Evidence for How Loneliness Affects Memory in Old Age

WIRED

A longitudinal study found that loneliness is closely linked to lapses in immediate and delayed recall. Neuroscientists know that there is a link between loneliness and cognitive decline in older adults, although it is still difficult to understand the exact magnitude of the link. A new longitudinal study provides evidence that a proportion of people who feel lonely end up having more memory impairment, though this doesn't necessarily mean that their brains age faster. The report, published in Aging & Mental Health, shows that older adults with higher levels of loneliness scored lower on tests of immediate and delayed recall. Even so, the rate at which their memory declined over six years was virtually identical to those who were not lonely.
