Without forests, mosquitoes turn to human blood
Deforestation might lead to more deadly mosquito bites. The Atlantic Forest on the eastern coast of South America is home to about 40 different mosquito species. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. If you're someone who mosquitoes just, we feel your pain. Unfortunately, new data indicates the number of mosquito species that feed on humans is increasing--and it's likely to get worse.

An Invasive Disease-Carrying Mosquito Has Spread to the Rocky Mountains
The Aedes aegypti mosquito that can carry dengue, yellow fever, and Zika was thought to be too reliant on a hot and wet climate to survive in the Mountain West. But now, a population is thriving in Western Colorado. Hannah Livesay, biologist at the Grand River Mosquito Control District, points out the characteristic white markings of an Aedes aegypti mosquito shown under a microscope at her lab in Grand Junction, Colo. It can carry life-threatening diseases. It's difficult to find and hard to kill.

Mosquito-borne diseases pose a major global health risk, requiring early detection and proactive control of breeding sites to prevent outbreaks. In this paper, we present VisT ext-Mosquito, a multimodal dataset that integrates visual and textual data to support automated detection, segmentation, and reasoning for mosquito breeding site analysis. The dataset includes 1,828 annotated images for object detection, 142 images for water surface segmentation, and natural language reasoning texts linked to each image. The YOLOv9s model achieves the highest precision of 0.92926 and mAP@50 of 0.92891 for object detection, while YOLOv11n-Seg reaches a segmentation precision of 0.91587 and mAP@50 of 0.79795. F or reasoning generation, we tested a range of large vision-language models (LVLMs) in both zero-shot and few-shot settings. Our fine-tuned Mosquito-LLaMA3-8B model achieved the best results, with a final loss of 0.0028, a BLEU score of 54.7, BERTScore of 0.91, and ROUGE-L of 0.85. This dataset and model framework emphasize the theme "Prevention is Better than Cure", showcasing how AI-based detection can proactively address mosquito-borne disease risks.

Mosquitos seem to like beer drinkers who recently had sex
The Mosquito Magnet Trial got personal. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Countless factors may (and may not) contribute to a mosquito's thirst for blood over others. And while there's no single answer to this millennia-old question, researchers at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands think they identified at least a couple influences that may increase your insect attractiveness: booze and certain nocturnal activities. While the team's study is still in review ahead of its publication, their experiment offers an interesting and possibly life-saving approach to studying mosquito behavior.

CDC warns of 'enhanced' virus risk for travelers amid outbreak spread by mosquitoes
Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel shares his perspective on whether the mosquito-borne virus in China will spread to the United States and how AI can be detrimental to children's and young adults' mental health on'Fox Report.' The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning that travelers to China face an "enhanced" risk of contracting a virus spread by mosquitoes. There has been an outbreak of chikungunya in Guangdong Province, which can cause fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash. Recently, the CDC raised the warning related to chikungunya in China from Level 1: "Practice Usual Precautions" to Level 2: "Practice Enhanced Precautions." The CDC says there are no medicines to treat chikungunya, and recommends preventing it by wearing insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, or staying in places that have air conditioning or screens on the windows and doors.

Warning as 'Frankenstein' rabbits with tentacles sprouting from their heads invade parts of the US: 'Do NOT touch them'
A mysterious virus has left ordinary rabbits in the US with shocking deformities, including faces full of horns and tentacles. The mutated rabbits have been spotted multiple times in Colorado, specifically in the city of Fort Collins. The sightings date back to 2024, when a Fort Collins resident shared a picture online, showing the creature's entire head covered in black, tentacle-like protrusions. It's believed the horns are due to a virus that causes cancerous growths and has no known cure. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has urged anyone who sees rabbits in the wild with these growths to stay away and not touch them.
