Medical robotics can help improve and extend the reach of healthcare services. A major challenge for medical robots is the complex physical interaction between the robot and the patients which is required to be safe. This work presents the preliminary evaluation of a recently introduced control architecture based on the Fractal Impedance Control (FIC) in medical applications. The deployed FIC architecture is robust to delay between the master and the replica robots. It can switch online between an admittance and impedance behaviour, and it is robust to interaction with unstructured environments. Our experiments analyse three scenarios: teleoperated surgery, rehabilitation, and remote ultrasound scan. The experiments did not require any adjustment of the robot tuning, which is essential in medical applications where the operators do not have an engineering background required to tune the controller. Our results show that is possible to teleoperate the robot to cut using a scalpel, do an ultrasound scan, and perform remote occupational therapy. However, our experiments also highlighted the need for a better robots embodiment to precisely control the system in 3D dynamic tasks.

Machines can never replace human creativity and technology should be in mankind's service were the biggest takeaways from a heavyweight panel looking to the future of content at the International Film Festival of India, Goa, on Sunday. The panel was devised and led by eminent filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (Red Sea Film Festival opener "What's Love Got to Do with It?"). Participants included Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" composer A.R. Rahman, Ronald Menzel, co-founder and chief strategy officer at Dreamscape Immersive, with tech maven Pranav Mistry, who was formerly CEO and president of Samsung Technology and Advanced Research, joining via video link. The panelists discussed the concept of the metaverse, which is still in is nascency. Mistry envisaged a future powered by VR, AR and AI where the audience participated in an MCU movie and solved world problems.

Metaverse : Not a mystery box but a rise of new era in healthcare - ET HealthWorld

#artificialintelligence

New Delhi: Metaverse, the new buzzword amongst healthcare, a collective virtual shared space is no more a mystery box. This new emerging technology which is more prominent in the cryptocurrency market and gaming segment is now slowly proliferating in the healthcare domain. Some of the big hospitals are already adapting the digital virtual space of'metaverse'. ETHealthWorld explores what does this new technology'really' mean for healthcare? How will this technology make transformational changes, break the physical rules of the real world and redefine the future of the health domain.

Robust Impedance Control for Dexterous Interaction Using Fractal Impedance Controller with IK-Optimisation

Robust dynamic interactions are required to move robots in daily environments alongside humans. Optimisation and learning methods have been used to mimic and reproduce human movements. However, they are often not robust and their generalisation is limited. This work proposed a hierarchical control architecture for robot manipulators and provided capabilities of reproducing human-like motions during unknown interaction dynamics. Our results show that the reproduced end-effector trajectories can preserve the main characteristics of the initial human motion recorded via a motion capture system, and are robust against external perturbations. The data indicate that some detailed movements are hard to reproduce due to the physical limits of the hardware that cannot reach the same velocity recorded in human movements. Nevertheless, these technical problems can be addressed by using better hardware and our proposed algorithms can still be applied to produce imitated motions.

Showcasing power of AI, metaverse, web3

#artificialintelligence

There are three primary reasons for organizing such an event. First, the government understands the power of AI and wants India to be a superpower in this space. In 2020, for instance, while speaking at the Responsible AI for Social Empowerment Sumit (RAISE), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he wants India to become a global hub for AI. Second, we cannot have a meaningful conversation about digital transformation now without referring to cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, image processing, natural language processing (NLP), and a suite of other AI technologies. Market research and advisory firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has forecast India's AI market to touch $7.8 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 20.2%.

AI Startup Two Platforms Snags $15M Investment

#artificialintelligence

Silicon Valley artificial intelligence (AI) startup Two Platforms (TWO) was backed with a $15 million investment from India's Jio Platforms in exchange for a 25% stake in the company on a fully diluted basis, according to a blog post from TWO on Wednesday (Feb. TWO, founded by Pranav Mistry in July, focuses on building interactive and immersive AI experiences. TWO is moving towards what it believes is the next chapter of AI following text and voice -- visual and interactive. A pioneer in the fields of robotics, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), Mistry was most recently the president and CEO of Samsung Technology and Advanced Research. AI spend rises as enterprises solve for scale, adoption

#artificialintelligence

The number of companies with AI budgets in the $500,000 to $5 million range rose 55% year over year, according to Appen's State of AI and Machine Learning report released Tuesday. The survey was conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Appen and consulted 501 business leaders and data specialists. Scaling AI technology is a bigger priority for enterprise businesses when compared to their smaller counterparts. By contrast, diversity of the data powering AI is a higher priority for small and medium companies than for enterprises. Regardless of size, businesses with annual AI budgets of $1 million or more were more likely to bring their projects closer to deployment.

Should AI Be Part of Your Digital Transformation Strategy? - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

AI is seeping into enterprises from all directions. It's being embedded in applications, software tools, devices and equipment. Yet, some organizations still don't have an AI strategy. "The journey to AI having an impact at a firm is challenging and sometimes long," said Nigel Duffy, global artificial intelligence leader at professional services firm EY. "To have an impact with AI you must solve a lot of problems, many of which have nothing to do directly with AI, [such as] how do you deploy solutions? How do you get them into your infrastructure? How do you get people to use them? What are the workforce and change management considerations? What kind of training is required? AI is too disruptive to ignore. If your company lacks an AI strategy by design, then it has one by default. A default strategy is a Wild, Wild West scenario in which AI is popping up in various places within an organization, without orchestration and alignment. The lack of cohesion and direction can result in several issues including governance and security. "[S]ome of those risks may not be well characterized, so they have not been addressed by the appropriate level of governance and review," said Duffy. "Most AI is going to come through procurement or it's going to come through the backdoor or technology you've deployed." Should an AI strategy be part of a digital transformation strategy? One reason some people think an AI strategy should be part of a digital transformation strategy is because the digital transformation strategy is viewed as the overarching business initiative that's facilitated by modern technologies. "If an organization's digital transformation strategy does not already include AI, then there is a real need to revisit the overall approach to transformation, said David Homa, director of the Digital Initiative at Harvard Business School.

5 Companies Using AI to Generate Creative Advertisement Content

#artificialintelligence

Advertisements are a front runner in marketing. Consumers get a hint of the product range of a company and its features mostly through advertisement strategy. It plays a vital role in improving the sales of products. Starting from choosing models to picking a shooting location and affording to the cameramen, and machinery used for the process, advertisements come with a lofty sum of money spent. It is not normal for an MSME to spend a lot on such video ads.
