Automatic Speech Recognition Biases in Newcastle English: an Error Analysis

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems struggle with regional dialects due to biased training which favours mainstream varieties. While previous research has identified racial, age, and gender biases in ASR, regional bias remains underexamined. This study investigates ASR performance on Newcastle English, a well-documented regional dialect known to be challenging for ASR. A two-stage analysis was conducted: first, a manual error analysis on a subsample identified key phonological, lexical, and morphosyntactic errors behind ASR misrecognitions; second, a case study focused on the systematic analysis of ASR recognition of the regional pronouns ``yous'' and ``wor''. Results show that ASR errors directly correlate with regional dialectal features, while social factors play a lesser role in ASR mismatches. We advocate for greater dialectal diversity in ASR training data and highlight the value of sociolinguistic analysis in diagnosing and addressing regional biases.
Towards an Environmental Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

In recent years, much research has been dedicated to uncovering the environmental impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), showing that training and deploying AI systems require large amounts of energy and resources, and the outcomes of AI may lead to decisions and actions that may negatively impact the environment. This new knowledge raises new ethical questions, such as: When is it (un)justifiable to develop an AI system, and how to make design choices, considering its environmental impact? However, so far, the environmental impact of AI has largely escaped ethical scrutiny, as AI ethics tends to focus strongly on themes such as transparency, privacy, safety, responsibility, and bias. Considering the environmental impact of AI from an ethical perspective expands the scope of AI ethics beyond an anthropocentric focus towards including more-than-human actors such as animals and ecosystems. This paper explores the ethical implications of the environmental impact of AI for designing AI systems by drawing on environmental justice literature, in which three categories of justice are distinguished, referring to three elements that can be unjust: the distribution of benefits and burdens (distributive justice), decision-making procedures (procedural justice), and institutionalized social norms (justice as recognition). Based on these tenets of justice, we outline criteria for developing environmentally just AI systems, given their ecological impact.
Understanding How Blind Users Handle Object Recognition Errors: Strategies and Challenges

Object recognition technologies hold the potential to support blind and low-vision people in navigating the world around them. However, the gap between benchmark performances and practical usability remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a study aimed at understanding blind users' interaction with object recognition systems for identifying and avoiding errors. Leveraging a pre-existing object recognition system, URCam, fine-tuned for our experiment, we conducted a user study involving 12 blind and low-vision participants. Through in-depth interviews and hands-on error identification tasks, we gained insights into users' experiences, challenges, and strategies for identifying errors in camera-based assistive technologies and object recognition systems. During interviews, many participants preferred independent error review, while expressing apprehension toward misrecognitions. In the error identification task, participants varied viewpoints, backgrounds, and object sizes in their images to avoid and overcome errors. Even after repeating the task, participants identified only half of the errors, and the proportion of errors identified did not significantly differ from their first attempts. Based on these insights, we offer implications for designing accessible interfaces tailored to the needs of blind and low-vision users in identifying object recognition errors.
Impact of Experiencing Misrecognition by Teachable Agents on Learning and Rapport

While speech-enabled teachable agents have some advantages over typing-based ones, they are vulnerable to errors stemming from misrecognition by automatic speech recognition (ASR). These errors may propagate, resulting in unexpected changes in the flow of conversation. We analyzed how such changes are linked with learning gains and learners' rapport with the agents. Our results show they are not related to learning gains or rapport, regardless of the types of responses the agents should have returned given the correct input from learners without ASR errors. We also discuss the implications for optimal error-recovery policies for teachable agents that can be drawn from these findings.
Record Deduplication for Entity Distribution Modeling in ASR Transcripts

Voice digital assistants must keep up with trending search queries. We rely on a speech recognition model using contextual biasing with a rapidly updated set of entities, instead of frequent model retraining, to keep up with trends. There are several challenges with this approach: (1) the entity set must be frequently reconstructed, (2) the entity set is of limited size due to latency and accuracy trade-offs, and (3) finding the true entity distribution for biasing is complicated by ASR misrecognition. We address these challenges and define an entity set by modeling customers true requested entity distribution from ASR output in production using record deduplication, a technique from the field of entity resolution. Record deduplication resolves or deduplicates coreferences, including misrecognitions, of the same latent entity. Our method successfully retrieves 95% of misrecognized entities and when used for contextual biasing shows an estimated 5% relative word error rate reduction.
Detecting, Repairing, and Preventing Human-Machine Miscommunication
This article summarizes a workshop entitled "Detecting, Repairing, and Preventing Human-Machine Miscommunication," held on 4 August 1996 in Portland, Oregon. The author presents the significant issues raised during the four specific workshop sessions. Research related to achieving robust interaction is an important subarea in AI. Early work concerned the correction of spelling or grammatical errors in a user's utterance so that the system could more easily match them against a fixed linguistic model; work has also been done in the area of speech recognition, attempting to find the best fit of a sound signal to legal sequences of linguistic objects. All these approaches have assumed that the system's model is always correct.
