miserably
This AI image classifier is failing miserably at labeling human beings Plow
Modern artificial intelligence is often lauded for its growing sophistication, but mostly in doomer terms. If you're on the apocalyptic end of the spectrum, the AI revolution will automate millions of jobs, eliminate the barrier between reality and artifice, and, eventually, force humanity to the brink of extinction. Along the way, maybe we get robot butlers, maybe we're stuffed into embryonic pods and harvested for energy.
I faced off against a Scrabble-playing robot and lost miserably
I thought hanging out with a Scrabble-playing robot would be a nice, chill time. I even imagined they would be useful at nursing homes, as therapy companions to elderly residents. Scrabble bot's official name is actually the Intelligent Vision System for Companion Robots, made by Taiwanese research company ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute). It uses a combination of AI, 3D vision, and hand-eye coordination to pour its opponent a cup of coffee, and then mercilessly crush them at Scrabble. The AI determines which combination of letter tiles can create the highest-scoring word, and tallies up the opponents score accurately as well.

Reprogramming the AI that wanted to name paint colors and failed miserably
Several weeks ago, artist and coder Janelle Shane tried to train a neural network to name paint colors. "Stanky Bean" was a kind of dull pink, and "Stoner Blue" was gray. Then there were the three shades of brown known as "Dope," "Burble Simp," and "Turdly." First, Shane realized that part of the initial problem was that she'd cranked up the neural net's "temperature" variable, which meant that it was picking less likely (or "more creative") possibilities as it generated paint names letter-by-letter. So she turned the temperature variable down, and found that the names were still pretty silly but they at least matched the colors most of the time.
