Existential Conversations with Large Language Models: Content, Community, and Culture

Shanahan, Murray, Singler, Beth

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Contemporary conversational AI systems based on large language models (LLMs) can engage users on a wide variety of topics, including philosophy, spirituality, and religion. Suitably prompted, LLMs can be coaxed into discussing such existentially significant matters as their own putative consciousness and the role of artificial intelligence in the fate of the Cosmos. Here we examine two lengthy conversations of this type. We trace likely sources, both ancient and modern, for the extensive repertoire of images, myths, metaphors, and conceptual esoterica that the language model draws on during these conversations, and foreground the contemporary communities and cultural movements that deploy related motifs, especially in their online activity. Finally, we consider the larger societal impacts of such engagements with LLMs.

Companies harness Greater Zurich's AI ecosystem

The first Swiss AI Report is addressing the trend around artificial intelligence (AI) and helping companies to orient themselves in the complex area of innovation. For this, Mindfire, a foundation specializing in AI, has joined forces with the think tank W.I.R.E. to assess the AI activities of 92 Swiss companies from a variety of sectors. This involved startups, SMEs, and even IT giants such as Google. In actual fact, AI is already firmly integrated into the day-to-day business of many companies. Stefan Pabstof W.I.R.E states: "Those who take the matter seriously prioritize it and want to thoroughly understand it to be able to fully exploit its potential."

Mindfire, a new foundation with the goal of "decoding the mind" to help develop true artificial intelligence (AI) is launching November 17th in Zurich, Switzerland. Futurism spoke with the founder of Starmind and president of the foundation, Pascal Kaufmann to learn more about its goals and the path to reach them. "We cannot achieve True AI until we understand actual intelligence. Intelligence has evolved as a means of nature to successfully guide us through an ever-changing environment. This gave rise to behavior, emotions, and consciousness. These critical factors must be taken into account in how we develop AI. This is the purpose of the Mindfire Foundation," he explains.
