Why was El Paso airspace shut down? Drones, security fears and confusion

Al Jazeera

Why was El Paso airspace shut down? A new United States military laser-based anti-drone system led authorities to halt air traffic in and out of El Paso, Texas, after aviation officials raised serious concerns about risks to commercial aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initially announced a 10-day airspace closure on Wednesday but removed the restriction less than eight hours later, a decision reports said stemmed from miscommunication between the Pentagon and aviation regulators. The FAA and the military had planned to discuss the issue at a February 20 meeting, but the army moved ahead without final FAA approval, prompting the agency to halt flights in El Paso, sources said. What happened when El Paso's airspace was shut down?

The Zapotec believed their ancestors descended from the clouds and that, in death, their souls returned to the heavens as spirits.

The World Cup draw is here - this is how it will work

BBC News

Pots, quadrants, confederation constraints, group position grids... the 2026 World Cup finals draw on Friday is not going to be a straightforward affair. There's a lot to unpack so we're going to explain it as simply as we can. Luckily, Fifa will have a computer to do most of the heavy lifting and make sure everything runs smoothly. Though as Uefa found out in 2021, sometimes technology does go wrong. Let's hope there will be no gremlins in Washington once the draw ceremony kicks off.

Mexico Preps for the 2026 World Cup With a Ticket Resale Platform and a Tourism App

WIRED

Mexico's consumer protection agency and FIFA are working on a "ticket relocation system" that will allow those with extra World Cup tickets to sell them safely and at appropriate prices. The Mexican government has presented its strategy to turn this summer's World Cup soccer tournament into an engine to strengthen trade, sports, tourism, and culture in the country where most of the games will be hosted. The Mexico 2026 Social World Cup project includes cultural events like soccer matches between robots, a public transit plan, and a new app where fans can sell securely sell any tickets they can't use. During a conference last week, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the intention is "to leave a sporting legacy in our country that goes beyond the competition itself." "[In this World Cup ] the eyes of the world will be here," Sheinbaum said, "and what they will see is a great country with an enormous cultural heritage. They will see that we are building a nation that is fairer, freer, and more democratic."

The Feasibility of Training Sovereign Language Models in the Global South: A Study of Brazil and Mexico

The rapid escalation of computational requirements for training large-scale language models has reinforced structural asymmetries between high-capacity jurisdictions and countries in the Global South. This paper examines the technical and fiscal feasibility of sovereign-scale language model training in Brazil and Mexico under conditions of constrained hardware access, energy availability, and fiscal ceilings. Using a dual-axis design that varies accelerator generation (NVIDIA H100 vs. A100) and training duration (90 vs. 150 days), we estimate compute demand, energy consumption, capital expenditures, and regulatory compatibility for the training of a 10-trillion-token model. Our findings show that while all configurations remain below export-control and electrical infrastructure thresholds, fiscal viability is determined by hardware efficiency. H100-based scenarios achieve training feasibility at a total cost of 8-14 million USD, while A100 deployments require 19-32 million USD due to higher energy and hardware demand. We argue that extending training timelines should be treated as a policy lever to mitigate hardware constraints, enabling the production of usable, auditable, and locally aligned models without competing at the global frontier. This study contributes to the discourse on AI compute governance and technological sovereignty by highlighting context-sensitive strategies that allow middle-income countries to establish sustainable and strategically sufficient AI capabilities.

Ancient poop from Mexico's 'Cave of the Dead Children' teems with parasites

Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. It's a really big deal when fossilized feces survive the ravages of time. These hardened pieces of excrement open up a window into what animals ate thousands of years ago and even what may have made them sick . Humans are not exempt from this, with dried human feces indicating we have always loved cheese and beer and that our microbiome has evolved over thousands of years. DNA recovered from 1,000-year-old dried feces indicates that intestinal infections from pinworm or Shingella may have plagued ancient people living in present day northern Mexico's Rio Zape Valley.

ByteDance's Other AI Chatbot Is Quietly Gaining Traction Around the World

WIRED

ByteDance's Other AI Chatbot Is Quietly Gaining Traction Around the World ByteDance is paying for ads and partnering with influencers to promote its AI chatbot app Cici in countries like the UK, Mexico, and Indonesia. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has built what is currently the most popular AI chatbot in China: Doubao . Launched in 2023, the app has risen to the top of the country's generative AI market, reaching more than 157 million monthly active users by August, according to Chinese analytics firm QuestMobile. But what's less known is that Doubao also has an overseas counterpart: Cici. It was released around the same time and features a nearly identical female cartoon avatar as its app icon, except Cici's has longer hair than Doubao's.

Saving sea turtles with solar-powered fishing nets

Popular Science

The LED lights reduced entanglements by 63 percent, according to a new study. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. For fishers working the inky dark night, it can be difficult to keep endangered or unwanted animals out of their nets. While lighted nets can reduce the bycatch of sharks and sea turtles, their batteries are short lived, expensive to replace, and not always easy to dispose of. The lights themselves are also heavy, can make the nets sag, and not easy for fishers to work with.

Dating apps used in Mexico to lure and kidnap U.S. citizens, officials warn

Los Angeles Times

U.S. citizens who visit Mexico are being warned that they may be at risk of being kidnapped by people who lure them in through dating apps, according to federal officials. The U.S. Consulate General Guadalajara warned that the victims of such schemes were kidnapped in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit areas in recent months, according to a news release. The consulate did not say how often this type of crime has occurred or whether any suspects have been arrested. Victims and their family members were extorted for large amounts of money in order to be released, officials said. Some of the victims met their captors in residences or hotel rooms.
