A NLP Approach to "Review Bombing" in Metacritic PC Videogames User Ratings

Coronado-Blázquez, Javier

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Many videogames suffer "review bombing" -a large volume of unusually low scores that in many cases do not reflect the real quality of the product- when rated by users. By taking Metacritic's 50,000+ user score aggregations for PC games in English language, we use a Natural Language Processing (NLP) approach to try to understand the main words and concepts appearing in such cases, reaching a 0.88 accuracy on a validation set when distinguishing between just bad ratings and review bombings. By uncovering and analyzing the patterns driving this phenomenon, these results could be used to further mitigate these situations.

Rotten Tomatoes is Deciding What Movies You Don't See--Without You Knowing It

WIRED

Who murdered Transformers: The Last Knight? The fifth movie in the series opened last weekend to numbers that weren't simply lower than expected--they amounted to the worst opening weekend haul of the entire franchise. Apparently, four visually nonsensical films about giant robots hitting each other had been plenty for moviegoers. This being a blame-loving industry, though, the search began for exactly who was responsible for this Floptimus Prime. Don't blame the actors; the fault lies not within the stars.

Forbes - Tech

Over the course of the past day, it's been tough to miss the nearly endless array of perfect scores rolling in for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's hard to imagine a better boost the Nintendo Switch could have at launch, but many may not realize just how well Breath of the Wild is reviewing from a historical perspective. Right now, Breath of the Wild is one of the best reviewed games of all time. On OpenCritic, Breath of the Wild has a 98 aggregate score, and though the site has not been open all that long, it's the top game there, beating out the likes of GTA V (96), Flower (95) and The Last of Us Remastered (95). Metacritic has been doing this a bit longer, and it's where you can see just how well Breath of the Wild is reviewing compared to other famous titles.

'Rogue One' tops box office once again over New Year's weekend

Los Angeles Times

Moviegoers bid adieu to 2016 and welcomed in 2017 over the four-day holiday weekend, spending about $200 million to see just the 10 top-grossing films, a pack led once again by "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." The continued forceful showing by Disney's "Rogue One" was expected to add $64 million to its total by the time the weekend drew to a close, bringing its domestic total to $439.7 million, according to figures from ComScore. That would make it the second-highest-grossing film of 2016 after only 18 days in theaters, behind another Disney enterprise, "Finding Dory," which has taken in $486 million during the year. Globally "Rogue One" has grossed nearly $775 million through Sunday, ComScore reported. Close behind "Rogue One" over the holiday weekend was Universal's new animated musical comedy "Sing," with an estimated four-day take of $56.4 million to bring its two-week domestic box office total to $180 million.
