AI arrives on college campuses: How students are using ChatGPT for essays, research and more
Ready or not, the AI revolution is upon us and one of its most immediate impacts is the emergence of chatbots like ChatGPT. "It will be a boon to the societies that pick this up," said junior student leader and president of the Metropolitan State University of Denver Chess Club Paul Nelson. Nelson is talking about ChatGPT and its rapid emergence on college campuses throughout the U.S. One educated at MSU Denver said the first time he heard of the chatbot was in November and now, four months later, it's a part of almost every conversation he has. "My first reaction when I first saw ChatGPT was, 'Oh my God. We are in trouble,'" said Dr. David Merriam, assistant professor of biology.

American English Is Now Reliant on Scrabble's Dictionary
In the mid-1970s, top players in an emerging tournament Scrabble scene persuaded the game's corporate owner to adopt a universal lexicon for competition. Players manually scraped five standard college dictionaries, recording every unique two- through eight-letter word (plus inflections) that met the game's rules. When the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary was published, in 1978, players rejoiced. "You can retire the boxing gloves and put up your swords," the Scrabble Players Newspaper wrote. "You now have an arbiter to settle all arguments."

To AI, or Not To AI: Artificial Intelligence Helps Define Shakespeare
The MIT Technology Review reports that a scientist claims he knows for sure where Shakespeare ends and his long-suspected collaborator begins. Petr Plecháč used machine learning to train an algorithm on the works of William Shakespeare and another writer named John Fletcher. Literary scholars began speculating on the possibility of shared authorship in 1850, and Plecháč believes he has confirmed that scholar's theory. First, some quick and dirty background on the shared authorship theory. Scholars have always known that Shakespeare was replaced by Fletcher after Shakespeare's death.
Relative contributions of Shakespeare and Fletcher in Henry VIII: An Analysis Based on Most Frequent Words and Most Frequent Rhythmic Patterns
The versified play Henry VIII is nowadays widely recognized to be a collaborative work not written solely by William Shakespeare. We employ combined analysis of vocabulary and versification together with machine learning techniques to determine which authors also took part in the writing of the play and what were their relative contributions. Unlike most previous studies, we go beyond the attribution of particular scenes and use the rolling attribution approach to determine the probabilities of authorship of pieces of texts, without respecting the scene boundaries. Our results highly support the canonical division of the play between William Shakespeare and John Fletcher proposed by James Spedding, but also bring new evidence supporting the modifications proposed later by Thomas Merriam. 1 Introduction In the first collection of William Shakespeare's works published in 1623 (the so-called First Folio) a play appears entitled The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eight for the very first time. Nowadays it is widely recognized that along with Shakespeare, other authors were involved in the writing of this play, yet there are different opinions as to who these authors were and what the precise shares were of their authorial contributions. This article aims to contribute to the question of the play's authorship using combined analysis of vocabulary and versification and modern machine learning techniques (as proposed in [1,2]). 2 History and related works While the stylistic dissimilarity of Henry VIII (henceforth H8) to Shakespeare's other plays had been pointed out before [3], it was not until the mid-nineteenth century that Shakespeare's sole authorship was called into question. In 1850 British scholar James Spedding published an article [4] attributing several scenes to John Fletcher. Spedding supported this with data from the domain of versification, namely the ratios of iambic lines ending with a stressed syllable ("The arXiv:1911.05652v1

E3-Announced 'Minecraft' Cross-Platform Update Leaves Out Xbox 360, Wii U Editions & Others
Microsoft made some announcements at E3 this weekend, and one of which focused on the upcoming "Better Together" update for the very popular "Minecraft" game. This update will apparently and literally be a game changer as it would enable many players to access the game using all gaming platforms save for Xbox 360, Wii U and the older versions for Mac and Windows. The "Better Together" update is slated for release this summer. CNET says the update was named this way because it will be the one that would bring the relatively isolated versions of the game toward the more prominent version. In this case, the latter pertains to the "Bedrock" version that is built for Windows 10 PCs, Apple TV, Oculus Rift, Gear VR, as well as iOS and Android devices.

Microsoft will unify most 'Minecraft' platforms this summer
Minecraft is about to enter its final form. In August, the Better Together update will land and unify the game across nearly every platform, from iOS and Android to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. This unification comes courtesy of the Bedrock Engine, which currently powers all mobile, Windows 10, Amazon Fire and VR versions of the game. Now, it won't matter which platform your friends use to play Minecraft -- every version will be the same, they'll share DLC and updates, and all players will be able to create new worlds together. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360 versions of Minecraft are not included in the initial Better Together update.
Minecraft Is Getting An Update That Will Change Everything
Minecraft, meet bombshell: The promise of a master version of studio Mojang's sandbox builder, identical across all platforms, not just functionally but at the codebase level, is finally happening. Pop some corks and fill those glasses. But when this new version arrives, it also stands to usher in something much grander and subversive. Despite efforts for years to bring Minecraft's many versions into alignment, the game has remained siloed in essential ways. You still have the Java-based PC edition, the franchise elder and a computers-only club (it also supports Mac and Linux) that is still the guiding template and place where new features tend to prove out first--to this version, all others are essentially beholden.
