How will machine learning impact you?

#artificialintelligence

"Microsoft's cloud boss says the company doesn't want to compete with doctors." This statement is coming as Microsoft and other Cloud providers are making their way into the healthcare space. Microsoft recently announced the acquisition of a speech recognition company that doctors use to keep notes on meetings with patients. The move will provide Microsoft an expanded Cloud offering and, perhaps incidentally, access to lots and lots of data when it comes to healthcare and diagnosis. Like any knowledge-based industry, doctors should be wary of the long-term impacts of artificial intelligence on their industry.

Jim Simons is the greatest moneymaker in modern financial history, and no other investor – Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, Ray Dalio, Steve Cohen, or George Soros – can touch his record. His firm has earned profits of more than $100 billion, and between 1994 and 2004, its signature fund, The Medallion Fund, averaged 70 per cent annual return. Medallion's returns don't seem to correlate with known factors and the only thing most people get to know is that the strategy is "statistical arbitrage". People are confounded by the fact that the proliferation of other quantitative hedge funds in recent years hasn't caused Medallion's performance to deteriorate. Last year, there was a very readable book about Jim Simons: On the man who solved the markets – How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution, Penguin 2019.

Most CEOs Don't Know Where to Deploy AI Within their Business - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

Like many organizations, your company may be pouring resources into the development of artificial intelligence. Investment in the space is skyrocketing. IDC predicts that by the end of 2018, companies will have spent 54% more on AI than they did in 2017. However, for many, that investment has yet to pay off. A recent survey from MIT Sloan Management Review and Boston Consulting Group found that less than 5% of organizations have incorporated AI extensively into their processes.

Carnival will give its cruise ship guests the Ocean Medallion so they can access their personalized cruise experience. Carnival Cruise line is betting that a whole host of intelligent, connected services for guests will turn the cruise experience from a "supposedly fun thing" to a truly personal and compelling vacation. "Our sole purpose is... to make our guests happy, to transport them," Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald said at CES 2017 in Las Vegas Thursday. Donald's speech -- the first keynote address on the first official day of the 50th annual CES -- illustrated how technology has become an integral part of just about every industry, with much of it powered by machine learning. The cruise line is partnering with Accenture to deliver a range of new guest services, including an IoT network, a digital "experience" portal and even a new wearable.

Just 3000 Ride-Share Vehicles Could Replace NYC's Whole Taxi Fleet

Forbes - Tech

Two former allies of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie plan to appeal their conviction for intentionally causing traffic gridlock in Fort Lee during morning rush hour for a week in September 2013. Over the past five years, mobile tech has allowed companies like Uber, Lyft, and Juno to disrupt traditional travel with a new ride-hail industry worth billions. According to recent figures from the Massechusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a mere 3000 ride-pools could even handle the business of New York City's entire taxi fleet with hardly any delay--provided, of course, that riders are willing to share. A study by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) revealed this week that ride-sharing platforms similar to UberPOOL and Lyft Line could handle the passenger traffic of NYC's 14,000 taxis with just a few thousand vehicles. In addition, the team says, such programs could help reduce congestion on city streets (if not its' sidewalks) by an impressive 300%.
