Bringing Pedagogy into Focus: Evaluating Virtual Teaching Assistants' Question-Answering in Asynchronous Learning Environments
Siyan, Li, Xu, Zhen, Raghuram, Vethavikashini Chithrra, Zhang, Xuanming, Yu, Renzhe, Yu, Zhou
Asynchronous learning environments (ALEs) are widely adopted for formal and informal learning, but timely and personalized support is often limited. In this context, Virtual Teaching Assistants (VTAs) can potentially reduce the workload of instructors, but rigorous and pedagogically sound evaluation is essential. Existing assessments often rely on surface-level metrics and lack sufficient grounding in educational theories, making it difficult to meaningfully compare the pedagogical effectiveness of different VTA systems. To bridge this gap, we propose an evaluation framework rooted in learning sciences and tailored to asynchronous forum discussions, a common VTA deployment context in ALE. We construct classifiers using expert annotations of VTA responses on a diverse set of forum posts. We evaluate the effectiveness of our classifiers, identifying approaches that improve accuracy as well as challenges that hinder generalization. Our work establishes a foundation for theory-driven evaluation of VTA systems, paving the way for more pedagogically effective AI in education.
Beat-Aligned Spectrogram-to-Sequence Generation of Rhythm-Game Charts

In the heart of "rhythm games" - games where players must perform actions in sync with a piece of music - are "charts", the directives to be given to players. We newly formulate chart generation as a sequence generation task and train a Transformer using a large dataset. We also introduce tempo-informed preprocessing and training procedures, some of which are suggested to be integral for a successful training. Our model is found to outperform the baselines on a large dataset, and is also found to benefit from pretraining and finetuning.
AI is the latest Wall Street craze. Is it also the next bubble?
Artificial intelligence is the latest tech flavor of the month. Industry giants Google, Microsoft and China's Baidu have all had big AI announcements in recent days, as ChatGPT bot mania is taking the corporate world by storm. All of this AI news has helped boost shares of Baidu (BIDU), Microsoft (MSFT) and Google owner Alphabet (GOOGL) this year. However, Alphabet (GOOGL) tumbled Wednesday following a rocky demo of Bard, its rival to ChatGPT. Traders have also been bidding up the stocks of much smaller, unprofitable companies that are trying to make a name for themselves in the AI arms race.
Startups building integrated nursing ecosystems with AI
If you think the digitisation of nursing is just about nurses filling out scores on a mobile device, it's time to think again because artificial intelligence (AI) could be about to revolutionise the way nurses do their jobs. Recent digital developments include bottles which automatically issue reminders to drink, diapers that sound an alert when wet and sensor-equipped stoma pouches. Heiko Mania, NursIT CEO, and a former nurse, believes AI will change the focus of nursing care: "Modern nursing expert software not only streamlines nursing documentation, it will automate it using AI, sensors and smart nursing aids. At the same time, professional nursing care will change from reactive to predictive, preventive nursing care." Mania said they had developed a nursing care expert system, CareIT Pro, which supports automation in nursing.
Analysis of the George III letters suggests he had mania
In his 60-year reign as King of Great Britain and Ireland, King George III suffered from recurrent episodes of both physical and mental illness. Researchers have programmed a computer to'read' the famous King's letters, analaysing the characteristics of his writing. The results suggest that King George III suffered from'acute mania' - a term used to describe an excitable, hyperactive condition. In his 60 year reign as King of Great Britain and Ireland, King George III suffered from recurrent episodes of both physical and mental illness. Researchers from St George's University, London, programmed a computer to'read' hundreds of King George III's letters, to understand his mental state.
Five AI Startup Predictions for 2017
With AI in a full-fledged mania, 2017 will be the year of reckoning. Pure hype trends will reveal themselves to have no fundamentals behind them. Paradoxically, 2017 will also be the year of breakout successes from a handful of vertically-oriented AI startups solving full-stack industry problems that require subject matter expertise, unique data, and a product that uses AI to deliver its core value proposition. Over the past year a mania has risen up around'bots.' In the technical community, when we talk about bots, we usually mean software agents which tend to be defined by "four key notions that distinguish agents from arbitrary programs; reaction to the environment, autonomy, goal-orientation and persistence." Enterprises have decided to usurp the term'bot' to be mean'any form of business process automation' and create the term'RPA', robotic process automation.
Understanding log_loss - March Machine Learning Mania 2016
I read somewhere on this forum that last years winner had only 18 misclassification's. That made me suspicious way my submitted model is only in 126 place on a leader-board( my current result is 42 True predictions and 14 False ones). It seems that if I would had made my predictions more aggressive, something like: if pred 0.5: pred 0.95 else: pred 0.05 My log_loss would be 0.34, instead of 0.53. I'm curious is this common case to manually edit your probabilities or other classifiers like neural networks ( never tried it) just predicting with higher confidence?
