The days of getting your driving licence out to prove your age could soon be a thing of the past. The UK government has confirmed that a digital version is being launched this year. A new app will be unveiled this summer, which will include a'wallet' to store digital versions of official documents. This will begin with a veteran's card, followed by a pilot of driving licences. The wallet will make use of security features already built into modern smartphones – such as facial recognition – for protection.

Distributed Machine Learning (DML) on resource-constrained edge devices holds immense potential for real-world applications. However, achieving fast convergence in DML in these heterogeneous environments remains a significant challenge. Traditional frameworks like Bulk Synchronous Parallel and Asynchronous Stochastic Parallel rely on frequent, small updates that incur substantial communication overhead and hinder convergence speed. Furthermore, these frameworks often employ static dataset sizes, neglecting the heterogeneity of edge devices and potentially leading to straggler nodes that slow down the entire training process. The straggler nodes, i.e., edge devices that take significantly longer to process their assigned data chunk, hinder the overall training speed. To address these limitations, this paper proposes Hermes, a novel probabilistic framework for efficient DML on edge devices. This framework leverages a dynamic threshold based on recent test loss behavior to identify statistically significant improvements in the model's generalization capability, hence transmitting updates only when major improvements are detected, thereby significantly reducing communication overhead. Additionally, Hermes employs dynamic dataset allocation to optimize resource utilization and prevents performance degradation caused by straggler nodes. Our evaluations on a real-world heterogeneous resource-constrained environment demonstrate that Hermes achieves faster convergence compared to state-of-the-art methods, resulting in a remarkable $13.22$x reduction in training time and a $62.1\%$ decrease in communication overhead.

Apple is copying Amazon's Alexa with a major change to Siri, a respected leaker claims. According to Apple tipster Mark Gurman, Siri users will soon only need to say'Siri' instead of'Hey Siri' when activating the personal assistant. The change would match Alexa, the virtual assistant from rival Amazon, which requires to users to simply say'Alexa' without the word'hey' first. It could be implemented across multiple Apple operating systems, including iOS for iPhones, as well as iPadOS, watchOS, macOS and more. Gurman has already revealed Apple is planning to unveil its mixed reality headset in less than two months.

Its ability to do different kinds of writing means it’s useful for many different kinds of businesses. Its capacity to respond to notes and revise its own work means there’s significant potential for hybrid human/AI work. Finally, we don’t yet know the limits of these models. All of this could mean sweeping changes for how — and what — work is done in the near future.

McDonald's has entered a strategic partnership with IBM to develop and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) technology that will help the fast-food giant automate its drive-thru lanes. According to the companies' joint statement about the partnership, the agreement will see IBM acquire McD Tech Labs which was created to advance employee and customer-facing innovations following McDonald's 2019 acquisition of Apprente. The IBM/McDonald's partnership will "accelerate McDonald's efforts to provide an even more convenient and unique customer and crew experience." The current technology was tested this summer at a handful of McDonald's locations in Chicago and according to the chain saw "substantial benefits" for both customers and staff, though with a roughly 85 percent accuracy does require some refinement. According to McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski, IBM's AI expertise thus makes them the "ideal partner" for the fast-food chain.
