For the past two campaigns, 11 of the 20 clubs have had their shirts adorned with the branding of some kind of betting firm - anything from online bookmakers to crypto casinos, sometimes who do not even operate in the UK. It shows how finding a shirt sponsor today is very different to how it was the 1980s, when corporate logos began to appear on kits regularly. Teams used to attract local companies or foreign firms well-known on these shores.

Redwing, a robotic submarine about the size of a surfboard, is embarking on a five-year journey that will follow the famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan's voyage around the world A small robot submarine is setting out to go around the world for the first time. Teledyne Marine and Rutgers University New Brunswick in New Jersey are launching an underwater glider called Redwing on its Sentinel Mission from Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts on 11 October. Researchers have been using underwater gliders since the 1990s. Rather than a propeller, gliders have a buoyancy engine, a gas-filled piston that slightly changes the craft's overall buoyancy. An electric motor pushes the piston in to make the glider heavier than water so it slowly sinks, coasting downwards at a shallow angle.

It's been two years since Google first debuted Project Green Light, a novel means of addressing the street-level pollution caused by vehicles idling at stop lights. At its Sustainability '23 event on Tuesday, the company discussed some of the early findings from that program and announced another wave of expansions for it. Green Light uses machine learning systems to comb through Maps data to calculate the amount of traffic congestion present at a given light, as well as the average wait times of vehicles stopped there. That information is then used to train AI models that can autonomously optimize the traffic timing at that intersection, reducing idle times as well as the amount of braking and accelerating vehicles have to do there. It's all part of Google's goal to help its partners collectively reduce their carbon emissions by a gigaton by 2030.

From the stethoscope to the CT scanner, technology and healthcare have long gone hand in hand. But the difficulty, especially in an age when budgets are stretched and digital innovations are proliferating, is deciding which technologies will deliver the biggest public health benefits. These need not be cutting-edge innovations. One important step is simply to replace existing analogue systems with digital ones, says David Maguire, senior analyst in the policy team at health think-tank the King's Fund. This year, Maguire co-authored a report that analysed the evidence on digital technology in health and social care. Among the most promising areas it identified was communications, both internally and when dealing with patients.

While it's reasonable for software engineering and operations communities to focus on the intricacies of technology, there is not much attention given to the intricacies of how people do their work. Ultimately, it is human performance that makes modern business-critical systems robust and resilient. As business-critical software systems become more successful, they necessarily increase in complexity. Ironically, this complexity makes these systems inherently messy so that surprising incidents are part and parcel of the capability to provide services at larger scales and speeds.13

Diversifying what you see may mean enriching what you can imagine. In a recent study Irish neuroscientist Eleanor Maguire, of University College London, had people imagine novel scenes and compared this to people imagining single objects against a white background.
