Ferrari's New Jony Ive-Designed EV Is Swathed in Glass and Aluminum We got a peek at the interior of Ferrari's new Luce electric car, which was dreamed up by famed ex-Apple designer and his firm, LoveFrom. It looks and feels a whole lot like an Apple product. Despite Ferrari dramatically scaling back its EV plans at the end of 2025, it's no exaggeration to say that the reveal of the Italian automaker's first full electric car is going to be automotive event of 2026. While the exterior is still under wraps, Ferrari has unveiled the interior of its upcoming electric vehicle designed by LoveFrom, the creative firm of Apple's former chief designer, Jony Ive. It may not turn out quite like the Project Titan car Apple worked on for a decade then killed in 2024, but it sure does look like it has similar DNA. "We are entering a new era in Ferrari," the company's CEO Benedetto Vigna said at the unveiling, which took place last week at San Francisco's pyramid-shaped Transamerica building.

Sir Jony worked for Apple for 27 years, helping to revive the company with groundbreaking products including the iPhone and iPod. He also designed the iMac in 1998 and the iPad in 2010. When Sir Jony left the company in 2019, Apple's CEO Tim Cook described him as "a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple's revival cannot be overstated". Shares in Apple fell more than 2% following the news of his partnership with OpenAI. He left to found his own company, LoveFrom, which has worked with companies such as Airbnb and Moncler.

OpenAI is buying an untested startup for 6.4bn, the ChatGPT maker's biggest acquisition yet. The hardware startup, called io, was founded by Apple design guru Jony Ive, known best as one of the principal architects of the iPhone. Ive and OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, said in a blog post that their partnership has been two years in the making. "A collaboration built upon friendship, curiosity and shared values quickly grew in ambition," they wrote in the blog post, which offered scant details on upcoming devices. "Tentative ideas and explorations evolved into tangible designs."

In the past week or so, we've had a logo upgrade, a big New York Times profile, and a Moncler outerwear collaboration from LoveFrom, Jony Ive and Marc Newson's San Francisco–headquartered design studio. The real news, though, is confirmation that LoveFrom is working with OpenAI's founder Sam Altman to build a secretive as-yet-unnamed AI device with investors including Laurene Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective, and Ive himself. The former Apple chief design officer is sometimes gently mocked for his obsession with seemingly small details, but when it comes to a potential mainstream human-AI interface, the man who has spent the past five years preoccupied with buttons--going so far as to create a five-volume history of garment fasteners--could be, in a somewhat inevitable way, the exact kind of person required to walk this particular tightrope of ethics and ambition. Details so far are scarce but revealing, at least where intentions are concerned. LoveFrom is designing "a product that uses AI to create a computing experience that is less socially disruptive than the iPhone."

Rumors emerged last year of a collaboration between former Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, but the two have until now kept quiet about it. In a profile by The New York Times that was published this weekend, though, Ive confirms his company LoveFrom is leading the design on an AI product being built with Altman. Also on board are Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, both of whom held big design roles at Apple. There's so far a team of about 10 employees involved with the project, based in a San Francisco office building that's one of several properties Ive has purchased on a single city block, according to the Times. But we still don't know much about the product they're working on.

Apple's designer exodus continues as product design chief Tang Tan is leaving the company and joining Jony Ive's design firm LoveFrom, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. There, he'll reportedly work on a new artificial intelligence hardware project backed by OpenAI's Sam Altman with aim of creating devices deploying the latest deep learning technology. Tan was in charge of design for Apple's main products including the iPhone, Watch and AirPods, so his departure leaves a sizable hole. As part of LoveFrom, Tan will act as hardware design lead for the new AI project, with Altman providing the software running underneath. All products are supposedly in the early concept phases, with a focus on devices for the home.
