Join Our Livestream: The Hype, Reality, and Future of EVs
As electric vehicles have gone mainstream, buyers are facing a smorgasbord of options, and Tesla--once untouchable--is no longer the dominant force. Last year was a tough one for Elon Musk's auto brand: Sales efforts faltered, and the company lost its title of world's largest EV maker to China's BYD . Today, it feels like all automakers-- including luxury brands --are racing to release their own EVs. But at the same time, some companies are scaling back production plans . So where is the market headed?

OpenAI's Atlas Browser Takes Direct Aim at Google Chrome
OpenAI's Atlas Browser Takes Direct Aim at Google Chrome The new ChatGPT-powered web browser is OpenAI's boldest play yet to reinvent how people use the web. OpenAI announced on Tuesday it's rolling out a new internet browser called Atlas that integrates directly with ChatGPT . Atlas includes features like a sidebar window people can use to ask ChatGPT questions about the web pages they visit. "We think that AI represents a rare, once a decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a livestream announcing Atlas. "Tabs were great, but we haven't seen a lot of browser innovation since then."

Join Our Next Livestream: Back to School in the Age of AI
Everyone has a stake in how tech is shaping education today. From the tech moguls and venture capitalists who are starting "microschools" and building ed-tech tools to policymakers who are writing bills to safeguard kids online and teachers who are getting creative about using AI for school. WIRED explored all this and more in our recent back-to-school digital edition, and we're excited to talk about it at our next subscriber-only livestream on Thursday, August 28, at 1 pm ET / 10 am PT / 6 pm UK. We'll talk about what we learned--turns out that AI has given new life to a skill many people thought would be extinct soon, and one country is attempting to actually ban social media for teenagers--but we also want to hear from you. Share your stories and questions for us via this form, or leave them in the comments below.
Join Our Next Livestream: What GPT-5 Means for ChatGPT Users
Few recent software releases have been as hyped as OpenAI's launch of its GPT-5 model. "GPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic, like a PhD level expert," said CEO Sam Altman in a recent press briefing. Is this new release as big of an upgrade as OpenAI claims? What do these changes actually mean for ChatGPT users? WIRED reporters are currently testing this newest drop from OpenAI, and seeing how GPT-5's ability to write, code, and perform other tasks compares to past releases.

Dating app scam victims told 'don't suffer in silence'
As well as targeting young people near the start of their lives, fraudsters have been stepping up their attempts to trick the friends and family of people who have died. Criminals exploit the grief of bereaved families by impersonating them online and charging mourners to see funeral livestreams that should be free, according to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) which supports businesses and local authorities' trading standards officers. These livestreams became more popular during lockdown, and have continued since for those who struggle to attend a funeral in person. Fraudsters contact mourners with bogus links to watch a funeral and demand payment, or set up fake donation pages on legitimate websites. Katherine Hart, CTSI lead officer for doorstep crime, said: "This is a truly despicable scam – targeting people during one of the most emotionally difficult moments of their lives. "It's hard to imagine a more callous form of fraud.
OpenAI's New GPT 4.1 Models Excel at Coding
OpenAI announced today that it is releasing a new family of artificial intelligence models optimized to excel at coding, as it ramps up efforts to fend off increasingly stiff competition from companies like Google and Anthropic. The models are available to developers through OpenAI's application programming interface (API). OpenAI is releasing three sizes of models: GPT 4.1, GPT 4.1 Mini, and GPT 4.1 Nano. Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, said on a livestream that the new models are better than OpenAI's most widely used model, GPT-4o, and better than its largest and most powerful model, GPT-4.5, in some ways. GPT-4.1 scored 55 percent on SWE-Bench, a widely used benchmark for gauging the prowess of coding models.
