Female mice often have multiple sexual partners--for survival
Birthing a litter with several fathers may help when food is scarce. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. If a female house mouse mates with multiple male house mice, her litter could have multiple fathers. Polyandry, as this mating practice is called, is common for various species. Yet scientists are still investigating its purpose and the potential benefits of birthing half siblings within the same litter.

The Best Cat Litter Depends on Your Cat and Type of Litter Box
Clumping clay cat litter is what I recommend for most people, as it primarily uses a naturally absorbent bentonite clay. It expands when wet/soiled, making it "clump," which is easier to scoop and generally more hygienic. However, it's not as environmentally friendly because it's not biodegradable and can contain carcinogenic silica dust.

Multi-robot Aerial Soft Manipulator For Floating Litter Collection
González-Morgado, Antonio, Smits, Sander, Heredia, Guillermo, Ollero, Anibal, Krupa, Alexandre, Chaumette, François, Spindler, Fabien, Franchi, Antonio, Gabellieri, Chiara
--Removing floating litter from water bodies is crucial to preserving aquatic ecosystems and preventing environmental pollution. In this work, we present a multi-robot aerial soft manipulator for floating litter collection, leveraging the capabilities of aerial robots. The proposed system consists of two aerial robots connected by a flexible rope manipulator, which collects floating litter using a hook-based tool. Compared to single-aerial-robot solutions, the use of two aerial robots increases payload capacity and flight endurance while reducing the downwash effect at the manipulation point, located at the midpoint of the rope. Additionally, we employ an optimization-based rope-shape planner to compute the desired rope shape. The planner incorporates an adaptive behavior that maximizes grasping capabilities near the litter while minimizing rope tension when farther away. The computed rope shape trajectory is controlled by a shape visual servoing controller, which approximates the rope as a parabola. The complete system is validated in outdoor experiments, demonstrating successful grasping operations. An ablation study highlights how the planner's adaptive mechanism improves the success rate of the operation. Furthermore, real-world tests in a water channel confirm the effectiveness of our system in floating litter collection. These results demonstrate the potential of aerial robots for autonomous litter removal in aquatic environments. In 2019, 353 million tonnes of plastic waste was generated, only 9% of which was recycled, while 22% was mismanaged, with a considerable portion of it ending up in water. The best solutions to plastic pollution include preventing it from entering the environment, e.g., by limiting single-use plastic, and improving plastic management [1].

Vision and Tactile Robotic System to Grasp Litter in Outdoor Environments
Páez-Ubieta, Ignacio de Loyola, Castaño-Amorós, Julio, Puente, Santiago T., Gil, Pablo
The accumulation of litter is increasing in many places and is consequently becoming a problem that must be dealt with. In this paper, we present a manipulator robotic system to collect litter in outdoor environments. This system has three functionalities. Firstly, it uses colour images to detect and recognise litter comprising different materials. Secondly, depth data are combined with pixels of waste objects to compute a 3D location and segment three-dimensional point clouds of the litter items in the scene. The grasp in 3 Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) is then estimated for a robot arm with a gripper for the segmented cloud of each instance of waste. Finally, two tactile-based algorithms are implemented and then employed in order to provide the gripper with a sense of touch. This work uses two low-cost visual-based tactile sensors at the fingertips. One of them addresses the detection of contact (which is obtained from tactile images) between the gripper and solid waste, while another has been designed to detect slippage in order to prevent the objects grasped from falling. Our proposal was successfully tested by carrying out extensive experimentation with different objects varying in size, texture, geometry and materials in different outdoor environments (a tiled pavement, a surface of stone/soil, and grass). Our system achieved an average score of 94% for the detection and Collection Success Rate (CSR) as regards its overall performance, and of 80% for the collection of items of litter at the first attempt.

A BlueROV2-based platform for underwater mapping experiments
Alinei-Poiana, Tudor, Rete, David, Martinovici, Davian, Maer, Vicu-Mihalis, Busoniu, Lucian
We propose a low-cost laboratory platform for development and validation of underwater mapping techniques, using the BlueROV2 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Both the ROV and the objects to be mapped are placed in a pool that is imaged via an overhead camera. In our prototype mapping application, the ROV's pose is found using extended Kalman filtering on measurements from the overhead camera, inertial, and pressure sensors; while objects are detected with a deep neural network in the ROV camera stream. Validation experiments are performed for pose estimation, detection, and mapping. The litter detection dataset and code are made publicly available.

Eureka E10 Review: An Adorably Dumb Robot Vacuum
This is not the best robot vacuum I have tested. The Eureka E10 is fairly affordable in the face of other robot mop-vacs; our recommendation for an affordable option is 800, while the E10 is 600. You might think to yourself, why buy a more expensive model then? Why spend more if I don't have to? The Eureka is a little dumb.
How roadside rubbish kills up to ten animals a day: Hedgehogs, squirrels, deer and foxes fall victim to litter
Roadside litter injures, traps or kills 10 animals every day, the RSPCA has revealed. The animal charity has warned that over the last three years, they received more than 10,000 reports of animals becoming distressed or even killed by discarded rubbish. It comes as separate research by National Highways reveals almost half of people are unaware that fruit peel and apple cores - which lure wildlife to their death - count as litter. A survey of 2,000 people also revealed that a third wrongly believe that dropping organic waste is beneficial to wildlife. While more than 90 per cent said they had never discarded litter onto the roadside, over 60 per cent said they had seen someone else doing it.
Jellyfish-like robots could one day clean up the world's oceans
Most of the world is covered in oceans, which are unfortunately highly polluted. One of the strategies to combat the mounds of waste found in these very sensitive ecosystems – especially around coral reefs – is to employ robots to master the cleanup. However, existing underwater robots are mostly bulky with rigid bodies, unable to explore and sample in complex and unstructured environments, and are noisy due to electrical motors or hydraulic pumps. For a more suitable design, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Stuttgart looked to nature for inspiration. Jellyfish-Bot is a collaboration between the Physical Intelligence and Robotic Materials departments at MPI-IS.
