Curator-turned-publisher Pantaloon has unleashed a subscription service that fans of indie games might be interested in digging into. The Playbill is a take on Xbox Game Pass, albeit one that focuses on "bold and bizarre" titles. The initial lineup features third-party games such as Buckshot Roulette, Silt, Ex Sanguis and Cabin Factory. Those sit alongside Pantaloon's own games: Sub-Verge, Occlude, It Takes a War, Boxroom, Rolla and the delightful music creation sim Offbeat. Much like Game Pass offers first-party Xbox titles (save for new Call of Duty offerings) to subscribers on day one, the Playbill will gain all of Pantaloon's own games as soon as they're released.

Amazon has long followed the same formula for its tablets. Fire tablets are known to be cheap, durable devices good for watching video and doing casual tasks like browsing, playing basic games and checking out Facebook. Amazon's own app store has received plenty of support from developers over the years, but it's still missing plenty of crucial options like Whatsapp and YouTube, just to name a few. This year, however, Amazon is changing up its strategy. Its new series of Alexa tablets may highlight the company's services and assistant first and foremost, but they're also full-fledged Android tablets with plenty of Google's own apps and access to the Play Store.

With a brand new series of tablets announced today, including the top-end Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro which usurps the Fire HD 10 at the top of the lineup, Amazon's hardware is better and bolder than before. That may sound like high praise, but the e-retailer's tablet lineup has always been aimed at the bargain bin rather than taking aim at the iPads and Galaxy Tabs of the world. This time around, the new hardware still doesn't reach those heights, but it flies cleanly in between and soars above its predecessor. To hear Amazon tell it, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is built around two things that could hardly be further apart: reading, and lots of AI. To that end, its marquee features include a "nanomatte" display to better imitate paper, along with a new processor to power Alexa, the AI-powered version of Amazon's long-running voice assistant.
