In this work we suggest a new architecture and loss for training deep feature hierarchies that linearize the transformations observed in unlabelednatural video sequences. This is done by training a generative model to predict video frames. We also address the problem of inherent uncertainty in prediction by introducing a latent variables that are non-deterministic functions of the input into the network architecture.

SymForce: Symbolic Computation and Code Generation for Robotics

We present SymForce, a library for fast symbolic computation, code generation, and nonlinear optimization for robotics applications like computer vision, motion planning, and controls. SymForce combines the development speed and flexibility of symbolic math with the performance of autogenerated, highly optimized code in C++ or any target runtime language. SymForce provides geometry and camera types, Lie group operations, and branchless singularity handling for creating and analyzing complex symbolic expressions in Python, built on top of SymPy. Generated functions can be integrated as factors into our tangent-space nonlinear optimizer, which is highly optimized for real-time production use. We introduce novel methods to automatically compute tangent-space Jacobians, eliminating the need for bug-prone handwritten derivatives. This workflow enables faster runtime code, faster development time, and fewer lines of handwritten code versus the state-of-the-art. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach can yield order of magnitude speedups on computational tasks core to robotics. Code is available at https://github.com/symforce-org/symforce.


Robust Finite-State Controllers for Uncertain POMDPs

Uncertain partially observable Markov decision processes (uPOMDPs) allow the probabilistic transition and observation functions of standard POMDPs to belong to a so-called uncertainty set. Such uncertainty sets capture uncountable sets of probability distributions. We develop an algorithm to compute finite-memory policies for uPOMDPs that robustly satisfy given specifications against any admissible distribution. In general, computing such policies is both theoretically and practically intractable. We provide an efficient solution to this problem in four steps. (1) We state the underlying problem as a nonconvex optimization problem with infinitely many constraints. (2) A dedicated dualization scheme yields a dual problem that is still nonconvex but has finitely many constraints. (3) We linearize this dual problem and (4) solve the resulting finite linear program to obtain locally optimal solutions to the original problem. The resulting problem formulation is exponentially smaller than those resulting from existing methods. We demonstrate the applicability of our algorithm using large instances of an aircraft collision-avoidance scenario and a novel spacecraft motion planning case study.

I have just completed my Term 2 of Udacity Self Driving Car Nanodegree. I wrote about Kalman Filter and Extended Kalman Filter. Today we will look at another member of Kalman Filter Family: The Unscented Kalman Filter. So, if you read my last two posts you would be knowing my colleague Larry by now. Summary: Kalman Filter: It is a tool to predict values using a bunch of mathematical equations under the assumptions that our data is in the form of Gaussian Distribution and we apply linear equations to that Gaussian distribution.
