Visiting the SOSP 2019 AI System Workshop

#artificialintelligence

The ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP) has a long history and a great reputation in Operating Systems (OS) research. This year SOSP was held in Huntsville, a charming town located in lake country, some 200km north of Toronto. On a rainy Sunday, Synced visited Huntsville to check out the SOSP AI System Workshop. The growing and widespread deployment of AI has motivated OS researchers to develop novel system engineering for AI. The SOSP AI System Workshop explored these efforts to advance research in AI and operating systems.

One simple graphic: Researchers love PyTorch and TensorFlow

#artificialintelligence

There are several outstanding training sessions and tutorials that cover PyTorch, TensorFlow, and other important topics at the O'Reilly Artificial Intelligence conference in San Jose, September 9-12, 2019. Early price ends August 2. In a recent survey--AI Adoption in the Enterprise, which drew more than 1,300 respondents--we found significant usage of several machine learning (ML) libraries and frameworks. About half indicated they used TensorFlow or scikit-learn, and a third reported they were using PyTorch or Keras. I recently attended an interesting RISELab presentation delivered by Caroline Lemieux describing recent work on AutoPandas and automation tools that rely on program synthesis.

Advancing cancer research through artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

The sequencing of 20,000 human genes has produced an immense amount of data that must now be deciphered. Sébastien Lemieux, a bioinformatics specialist at Université de Montréal's Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer, has begun doing so to advance cancer research. "Artificial intelligence helps us analyze data," he said in an interview. Lemieux is using samples taken from 482 patients with a specific form of cancer – acute myeloid leukemia – to try to pin down the genetic profile of cancer cells. "We're still a long way from developing a clinical application for the tools we're building, which combine artificial intelligence with genetics, but we hope to better understand the disease's genetic makeup," he explained.

The two boxers, fighting at 164 pounds, are arguably the most well-known active Mexican boxers and they are set to tangle on Mexico's most famous holiday. While Chavez has never fought on a Cinco de Mayo weekend, Alvarez defeated Amir Khan at about the same time last year and knocked out James Kirkland on May 9, 2015, and also held off Shane Mosley on Cinco de Mayo in 2012.
