Improved Data Encoding for Emerging Computing Paradigms: From Stochastic to Hyperdimensional Computing

Data encoding is a fundamental step in emerging computing paradigms, particularly in stochastic computing (SC) and hyperdimensional computing (HDC), where it plays a crucial role in determining the overall system performance and hardware cost efficiency. This study presents an advanced encoding strategy that leverages a hardware-friendly class of low-discrepancy (LD) sequences, specifically powers-of-2 bases of Van der Corput (VDC) sequences (VDC-2^n), as sources for random number generation. Our approach significantly enhances the accuracy and efficiency of SC and HDC systems by addressing challenges associated with randomness. By employing LD sequences, we improve correlation properties and reduce hardware complexity. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and energy savings for SC and HDC systems. Our solution provides a robust framework for integrating SC and HDC in resource-constrained environments, paving the way for efficient and scalable AI implementations.
Cops are using AI software to write police reports
Police departments are often some of the tech industry's earliest adopters of new products like drones, facial recognition, predictive software, and nowโartificial intelligence. After already embracing AI audio transcription programs, some departments are now testing a new, more comprehensive tool--software that leverages technology similar to ChatGPT to auto-generate police reports. According to an August 26 report from Associated Press, many officers are already "enthused" by the generative AI tool that claims to shave 30-45 minutes from routine officework. Initially announced in April by Axon, Draft One is billed as the "latest giant leap toward [the] moonshot goal to reduce gun-related deaths between police and the public." The company--best known for Tasers and law enforcement's most popular lines of body cams--claims its initial trials cut an hour of paperwork per day for users.

Adam Gopnik, in his essay about the legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette, points out that Americans rarely understand why Lafayette does not enjoy the exalted reputation in France that he does in America (Books, August 23rd). As Gopnik mentions, supporters of the French Revolution blamed Lafayette for not preventing the royal family's flight from France, in June, 1791. He was responsible, as the commander of the Paris militia, for security at the palace. When the King's disappearance became known, Lafayette colluded in saying that he had been kidnapped, an explanation that quickly fell apart when the King's denunciation of the Revolution was published. Soon afterward, protesters gathered to rally behind a petition objecting to the restoration of the King to the throne, and the National Guard was ordered to disperse them.
Researchers Develop AI That Can Predict Seizures Before They Happen
Previously, research groups were able to analyze brain activity using electroencephalogram (EEG) tests from which they could use the data to develop predictive models. I was with a friend who had a seizure, and it was incredibly scary. We were sitting at a bar in Brooklyn watching a Mets game, nothing out of the ordinary, when suddenly he just stood up and fell backwards, knocked his head into a chair and went into convulsions. I had no idea he suffered from periodic epileptic seizures. And it's much, much more horrible if you're the one who suffers from seizures.
