Learning bridge numbers of knots

This paper employs various computational techniques to determine the bridge numbers of both classical and virtual knots. For classical knots, there is no ambiguity of what the bridge number means. For virtual knots, there are multiple natural definitions of bridge number, and we demonstrate that the difference can be arbitrarily far apart. We then acquired two datasets, one for classical and one for virtual knots, each comprising over one million labeled data points. With the data, we conduct experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of common machine learning models in classifying knots based on their bridge numbers.


Ternary Instantaneous Noise-based Logic

One of the possible representations of three-valued instantaneous noise-based logic is proposed. The third value is an uncertain bit value, which can be useful in artificial intelligence applications. There is a forth value, too, that can represent a non-existing bit (vacuum-state) that is the same (1 numeric value) for all bits, however that is a squeezed state common for all bits. Some logic gates are explored. A ternary Universe has a significant advantage compared to the standard binary one: its amplitude is never zero during any clock period. All the known binary logic gates work for the binary bit values in the same way as earlier therefore the former binary algorithms can be run in the ternary system with no change and without the problems posed by zero values of the Universe.


Amazon reduces the size of its delivery drone team

Amazon has confirmed that it is laying off a number of people working on its internal drone delivery project. The Financial Times reported that the mega-retailer had opted to shrink its internal team in favor of using external contractors to complete the work. The report's anonymous sources said that executives were frustrated at the speed of progress, leading to the change in strategy. The first two companies to sign up are FACC Aerospace from Austria and Aernnova Aerospace from Spain, which are both component manufacturers. Reportedly, other businesses are expected to sign up in the near future, as Amazon tries to push Prime Air closer to reality.

Some people who are blind can echolocate like bats, making clicks with their mouths that help them understand the environment around them. Now researchers are beginning to understand how this works, so non-sighted people may one day be able to learn the technique. While many people who are blind get information from ambient echoes, only a few make noises themselves to echolocate. Some, such as Daniel Kish (pictured), are so proficient they can draw a sketch of a room after clicking their way around it, or even go mountain biking along unfamiliar routes. Previous research revealed that this human echolocation involves some brain areas that are used for vision in sighted people.

Daniel Kish sees more than you might expect, for a blind man. Like many individuals deprived of sight, he relies on his non-visual senses to perceive, map, and navigate the world. But people tend to find Kish's abilities rather remarkable. As a child, Kish taught himself to generate sharp clicking noises with his mouth, and to translate the sound reflected by surrounding objects into spatial information. Perhaps you've seen videos like this one, in which Kish uses his skills to navigate a new environment, describe the shape of a car, identify the architectural features of a distant building--even ride a bike: Impressive as his abilities are, Kish insists he isn't special. "People who are blind have been using various forms of echolocation to varying degrees of efficiency for a very long time," he says.


AI will usher in new generation of advanced security software

Healthcare IT and information security executives just got a glimpse of what the next generation of security software might look like and the new functionalities imminent products will bring to customers. IT consultancy Gartner noted that by 2020 at least 75 percent of security software tools on the market will include predictive and prescriptive analytics based on heuristics, artificial intelligence capabilities or machine learning algorithms to essentially augment hospitals' oft-limited security operations and staff. "The overall security market is undergoing a period of disruption due to the rapid transition to cloud-based digital business and technology models that are changing how risk and security functions deliver value in an organization," Gartner principal analyst Deborah Kish said. Gartner added that its recent research into security spending found that organizations across industries, not just healthcare, have developed a preference for buying security and risk management technologies as cloud computing or software-as-a-service offerings. "SaaS for security and risk management is becoming critical as customers transition to digital business practices," Gartner said.
