The past is a big deal in the video games industry right now. Hardly a month goes by when we're not being tempted by a new retro mini console, whether that's a cutesy Nintendo or a demure ZX Spectrum (a new version of which is arriving in November, complete with rubbery keys and 48 legendary games). And this year's release schedule is absolutely crammed with remasters of classic titles. In April, the video game news site Kotaku listed 30 old timers being exhumed and revived for 2024, including The Last of Us Part II, Tomb Raider 1-3 and Star Wars: Dark Forces. And the article missed a few! October alone will see updated versions of horror adventures Until Dawn, Silent Hill 2 and Clock Tower, as well as Lego Harry Potter.

Back in July, comic publisher Dark Horse leaked plans for a remaster of the two Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver games at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, the games' original developer Crystal Dynamics, along with Aspyr, have revealed that the remastered versions of the games are real and that the collection will be available on December 10. Further, while they announced the remastered bundle at a PlayStation State of Play event, it won't be coming out just for the PS4 and the PS5, but also for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X S, Xbox One and PC via Steam and Epic Games. The Soul Reaver titles are single-player action-adventure games, wherein the players control an "ex-vampire" named Raziel in the fictional land of Nosgoth. They were remastered by Aspyr, which recently released Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and which players may know as the developer behind the remastered versions of Tomb Raider I-III.

Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver fans, here is something special for you today. RainaAudron has just released an AI-enhanced HD remaster mod for the classic Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver game. This remastered mod attempts to significantly improve the game's blurry textures. Do note, however, that this mod is for the Dreamcast version of the game. Still, PC gamers can use a Dreamcast emulator in order to play and enjoy this unofficial remaster.

Hacker and security analyst Truman Kain has created a tool that can tell you in real-time if you're being followed while driving your Tesla. The "Surveillance Detection Scout" hack scans license plates and uses facial detection to create an in-depth log of cars your Tesla spots using its Sentry Mode camera software suite. The list can then be accessed by the driver, and each license plate can be labelled as "linked to friend," "high risk," or "usual." The app can even show you the exact route each detected driver took on a map, including video footage. Kain released the source code for the tool this weekend at DefCon, an annual hacker convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's not exactly clear who Kain is targeting with the tool.
