AI Squared raises $6M to help integrate AI into existing apps – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Integration platform AI Squared announced today the closing of a $6 million seed round led by NEA with participation from Ridgeline Partners. Launched in 2021, AI Squared helps companies adopt artificial intelligence by using a low-code platform to integrate it into existing applications in a timely and straightforward manner. Its founder, Benjamin Harvey, was inspired to start the company after a decade at the U.S. National Security Agency, where he saw how it and other organizations struggled to adopt artificial intelligence into existing applications. The struggle came from what's known as the last-mile challenge, which refers to the costly and time-consuming process of implementing an AI model within an application used on a day-to-day basis, like Netflix's program recommender system, he told TechCrunch. AI Squared helps solve the last-mile problem, assisting companies in adopting AI by using a low-code platform to integrate it into existing applications.

AI reduces miss rate of precancerous polyps in colorectal cancer screening

#artificialintelligence

Most colon polyps are harmless, but some over time develop into colon or rectal cancer, which can be fatal if found in its later stages. Colorectal cancer is the second most deadly cancer in the world, with an estimated 1.9 million cases and 916,000 deaths worldwide in 2020, according to the World Health Organization. A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Between February 2020 and May 2021, 230 study participants each underwent two back-to-back colonoscopies on the same day at eight hospitals and community clinics in the U.S., U.K. and Italy. One colonoscopy used AI; the other, a standard colonoscopy, did not. The rate at which precancerous colorectal polyps is missed has been estimated to be 25%.

He added a motorized lift to his beloved F-250 truck, explored local trails with a hand-powered bike, and joined a therapeutic horseback riding program. Now, one of Bal's daughters is about to get married, and 57-year-old Bal wants to walk in her ceremony. So on a recent Friday morning in December at Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, Florida, Bal was back on his feet, taking slow but steady steps as his granddaughter cheered from the sidelines.

Deadly Florida video game contest shooting reignites gun rights debate

The Japan Times

BOSTON – The slaying of two competitors at a Florida video game tournament on Sunday has stirred the long-simmering gun rights debate in the state on the eve of its hotly contested state and federal primary elections. With Florida voters scheduled to pick candidates for governor and Congress on Tuesday, some Democratic contenders said the shooting on Sunday in Jacksonville was further evidence of the need for stricter gun legislation, while other hopefuls canceled campaign appearances. The violence, which also wounded 11 people, was the latest in a series of high-profile shootings in the state, following the killing of 17 students and educators at a high school in February and of 49 people at an Orlando nightclub in 2016. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the suspected shooter as David Katz, 24, of Baltimore. Witnesses told local media Katz was angry because he lost the tournament.

Embark, a San Francisco start-up, completed a coast-to-coast test drive of its autonomous semi-truck, the company announced on Tuesday. It drove from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Florida, in the test drive, covering around 2,400 miles without relying on a human driver on the freeway. According to co-founder and CEO Alex Rodrigues, Embark has already integrated its self-driving systems into 5 trucks. It doesn't manufacture its own vehicles, but instead created a self-driving system that can be integrated into Peterbilt, and possibly other vehicles. Embark plans to acquire 40 more semis within the year for further testing and long-haul deliveries.

Jacksonville.com: Robot leads way into fiery eastern Kentucky coal mine 3/3/05

The robot maneuvered through the dark portals, which had been deprived of oxygen in an effort to smother the fire, aiming onboard lights and cameras in all directions, scanning for flames, monitoring for explosive methane gas, and looking for rocks cracked and loosened by the heat. The exercise marked the first time a robot was ever sent into a coal mine ahead of humans to make sure conditions were safe, said John Correll, assistant director of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. "The conditions could have been very, very hazardous," Correll said. "We didn't have to send humans in there, because we had the robot." Federal mine safety officials gathered at the Pikeville coal mine, operated by Alliance Resource Partners, on Thursday to tout the work of the robot and speculate about what the future of mining holds for such machines. Investigators still haven't determined the cause of the fire, which started on Dec. 25 and forced the mine to be closed for 33 days.
