A Testbed for Automating and Analysing Mobile Devices and their Applications
Simpson, Lachlan, Millar, Kyle, Cheng, Adriel, Chew, Hong Gunn, Lim, Cheng-Chew
The need for improved network situational awareness has been highlighted by the growing complexity and severity of cyber-attacks. Mobile phones pose a significant risk to network situational awareness due to their dynamic behaviour and lack of visibility on a network. Machine learning techniques enhance situational awareness by providing administrators insight into the devices and activities which form their network. Developing machine learning techniques for situational awareness requires a testbed to generate and label network traffic. Current testbeds, however, are unable to automate the generation and labelling of realistic network traffic. To address this, we describe a testbed which automates applications on mobile devices to generate and label realistic traffic. From this testbed, two labelled datasets of network traffic have been created. We provide an analysis of the testbed automation reliability and benchmark the datasets for the task of application classification.
Apple Music Sing Adds 'Karaoke Mode' to Streaming Songs
When it comes to advanced features and seamless compatibility with iOS devices, Apple Music has Spotify well and truly beaten. The Swedish streaming giant has essentially the same content library as Apple and better music discovery algorithms, but Apple Music has the technical edge with support for lossless audio, spatial sound that works in Apple's super popular earbuds and over-ear headphones, and one of the best features on the market for displaying lyrics. And now, Apple is revealing yet another ace up its technological sleeve. Apple Music Sing, available later this month, will give subscribers the ability to transform millions of the platform's most popular songs into lyric-free sing-alongs, all powered by machine intelligence and proprietary processing technology. On supported songs in Apple Music, a fader will appear that lets the user turn down the vocals and sing along to the tune.
Algoriddim's djay Pro AI adds digital control vinyl support for Mac and iOS
Many DJs who've gone digital still like the feel of vinyl for their sets, opting for apps and hardware that support a digital vinyl system (DVS). Today Algoriddim's djay Pro AI joins that camp with a few unique twists. Not only will DVS support include iOS devices in addition to Mac, but the control vinyl will offer a special B-Side with three'tracks' that leverage Neural Mix's ability to isolate stems from any song. This way you can drop the needle on track one for the original version, track two for an instrumental and three for an acapella, all extracted on the fly from any song you want to play. While DVS support is new for djay Pro AI on Mac, the addition of iPhones and iPads with this capability is truly unique.
Do You Trust Artificial Intelligence To Spend Your Media Dollars For You?
In the world of rampant data sharing, nefarious use of personal data and media manipulation, it is clear the lucrative ad tech market may not necessarily be ready for complete transformation. This post follows the introductory article entitled, Real-Time Bidding: The Ad Industry has Crossed a Very Serious Line. I had a chance to sit down with Dr. Augustine Fou, my collaborator on the article, and a seasoned marketer, who has "witnessed the entire arc of the evolution of digital marketing". Dr. Fou currently helps marketers audit their digital campaigns for ad fraud and optimize campaigns based on accurate analytics. Advertising has evolved tremendously in the last 20 years.
Apple's HomePod Mini packs mega sound
We've come to hold Apple devices to a high standard. They have a track record of performance, quality materials, and seamless integration (if only with each other). The HomePod Mini is exactly what we expected: Apple quality and Apple's proprietary ecosystem. It feels heavy in the hand, the power cord is thick and has a sturdy connection to the Mini's base, and the lights on top are beautiful, swirling colors like you'll see when you summon Siri on and iOS device. But how does it stack up to comparable smart speakers?
Apple HomePod Mini review: Apple's $99 smart speaker needs to be either better or cheaper
Apple's new, cheaper HomePod is a tough smart speaker to nail down. On the one hand, the HomePod Mini boasts impressive audio quality for its size. The HomePod Mini also has a Thread radio that lets it act as a smart home hub, but for now, there are only a few Thread-enabled smart devices available to control. And while Apple's new Intercom feature makes for an easy way to broadcast messages to household members, it doesn't allow for two-way calling. Now, if you're a dedicated Apple user and you've been waiting for a more affordable Siri-powered smart speaker than the $300 HomePod, the $99 HomePod Mini is your best--and only--bet.
Google Assistant can help you shop at Walmart--here's how
The coronavirus pandemic is changing the way we shop, especially for groceries. From donning masks to wearing gloves, many Americans are taking extra precautions when stocking up on pantry staples and other essential items. Grocery shopping online has become a great option for many during quarantine, and if you're shopping at Walmart, Google Assistant can help. With a few simple voice commands, you can order everything you need from Walmart using a Google-Assistant-enabled speaker or smartphone. While this may not be ideal for massive shopping lists, when you're standing in your kitchen looking at a cookbook or recipe site, it's convenient to just read off what you need to your smart assistant.

The Leviton Decora Smart Switch integrates with Apple HomeKit to control lights, ceiling fans, and other compatible products. The Leviton Decora Smart HomeKit Switch works over WiFi and packs a special chip that makes it compatible with Apple HomeKit. It connects to an app called Leviton Decora Smart Home that is only available for iPhone. To set up the switch, Apple HomeKit uses special barcodes that you scan with your phone. We preferred the Decora Smart Home app over the My Leviton app, finding it to be more polished and intuitive.
RxSwift Unit Testing and Machine Learning on iOS Devices
Venturing the world of RxSwift unit testing Reactive programming is an emerging discipline that allows to write declarative, asynchronous and concurrent code in a functional way and is continuously gaining popularity and adoption. In this talk we will wander in the unexplored pathways of RxSwift testing infrastructure. Specifically, we will look into the key aspects of testing RxSwift code and we will analyze the different ways to unit test observable streams through a simple sign in form.
