Mind the (Language) Gap: Towards Probing Numerical and Cross-Lingual Limits of LVLMs

We introduce MMCRICBENCH-3K, a benchmark for Visual Question Answering (VQA) on cricket scorecards, designed to evaluate large vision-language models (LVLMs) on complex numerical and cross-lingual reasoning over semi-structured tabular images. MMCRICBENCH-3K comprises 1,463 synthetically generated scorecard images from ODI, T20, and Test formats, accompanied by 1,500 English QA pairs. It includes two subsets: MMCRICBENCH-E-1.5K, featuring English scorecards, and MMCRICBENCH-H-1.5K, containing visually similar Hindi scorecards, with all questions and answers kept in English to enable controlled cross-script evaluation. The task demands reasoning over structured numerical data, multi-image context, and implicit domain knowledge. Empirical results show that even state-of-the-art LVLMs, such as GPT-4o and Qwen2.5VL, struggle on the English subset despite it being their primary training language and exhibit a further drop in performance on the Hindi subset. This reveals key limitations in structure-aware visual text understanding, numerical reasoning, and cross-lingual generalization. The dataset is publicly available via Hugging Face at https://huggingface.co/datasets/DIALab/MMCricBench, to promote LVLM research in this direction.

New Mets pitcher Justin Garza credits video game MLB The Show for helping save career

Pitcher Justin Garza was thinking about quitting the game he loved during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 as he struggled in the minor leagues. However, as Garza is joining the New York Mets now after a deal with the San Francisco Giants, he credits one thing to saving his career. Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Justin Garza, #63, reacts after giving up a home run to Minnesota Twins designated hitter Byron Buxton during the first inning at Target Field.

DIAMOND: An LLM-Driven Agent for Context-Aware Baseball Highlight Summarization

Traditional approaches -- such as Win Probability Added (WPA)-based ranking or computer vision-driven event detection -- can identify scoring plays but often miss strategic depth, momentum shifts, and storyline progression. Manual curation remains the gold standard but is resource-intensive and not scalable. We introduce DIAMOND, an LLM-driven agent for context-aware baseball highlight summarization that integrates structured sports analytics with natural language reasoning. DIAMOND leverages sabermetric features -- Win Expectancy, WPA, and Leverage Index -- to quantify play importance, while an LLM module enhances selection based on contextual narrative value. This hybrid approach ensures both quantitative rigor and qualitative richness, surpassing the limitations of purely statistical or vision-based systems. Evaluated on five diverse Korean Baseball Organization League games, DIAMOND improves F1-score from 42.9% (WPA-only) to 84.8%, outperforming both commercial and statistical baselines. Though limited in scale, our results highlight the potential of modular, interpretable agent-based frameworks for event-level summarization in sports and beyond.

CAMP: A Context-Aware Cricket Players Performance Metric

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Cricket is the second most popular sport after soccer in terms of viewership. However, the assessment of individual player performance, a fundamental task in team sports, is currently primarily based on aggregate performance statistics, including average runs and wickets taken. We propose Context-Aware Metric of player Performance, CAMP, to quantify individual players' contributions toward a cricket match outcome. CAMP employs data mining methods and enables effective data-driven decision-making for selection and drafting, coaching and training, team line-ups, and strategy development. CAMP incorporates the exact context of performance, such as opponents' strengths and specific circumstances of games, such as pressure situations. We empirically evaluate CAMP on data of limited-over cricket matches between 2001 and 2019. In every match, a committee of experts declares one player as the best player, called Man of the M}atch (MoM). The top two rated players by CAMP match with MoM in 83\% of the 961 games. Thus, the CAMP rating of the best player closely matches that of the domain experts. By this measure, CAMP significantly outperforms the current best-known players' contribution measure based on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.

The 20 most puzzling questions in modern life revealed - so do YOU know the answers?

Daily Mail - Science & tech

What is an NFT? (34%) Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are generally digital art pieces or music that can be bought or traded online. These are unique computer files encrypted with an artist's signature. As a result, they cannot be replicated, acting as a digital certificate of ownership and authenticity. In other words, buying an NFT is almost like the more traditional purchasing of fine art - except in a digital form. Artists can sell pieces that may be tricky to advertise otherwise, such as digital stickers.

Generative AI may only be a foreshock to AI singularity

#artificialintelligence

Check out all the on-demand sessions from the Intelligent Security Summit here. Generative AI, which is based on Large Language Models (LLMs) and transformer neural networks, has certainly created a lot of buzz. Unlike hype cycles around new technologies such as the metaverse, crypto and Web3, generative AI tools such as Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT are poised to have tremendous, possibly revolutionary impacts. These tools are already disrupting multiple fields -- including the film industry -- and are a potential game-changer for enterprise software. All of this has led Ben Thompson to declare in his Stratechery newsletter to declare generative AI advances as marking "a new epoch in technology."

GooglyPlusPlus: Win Probability using Deep Learning and player embeddings

#artificialintelligence

In my last post'GooglyPlusPlus now with Win Probability Analysis for all T20 matches' I had discussed the performance of my ML models, created with and without player embeddings, in computing the Win Probability of T20 matches. While the Random Forest gave excellent accuracy, it was bulky and also took an unusually long time to predict the Win Probability of a single T20 match. The above 2 ML models were built using R's Tidymodels. I had initially tried to use Tensorflow, Keras in Python but then abandoned it, since I did not know how to port the Deep Learning model to R and use in my app GooglyPlusPlus. But later, since I was stuck with a bulky Random Forest model, I decided to again explore options for saving the Keras Deep Learning model and loading it in R. I found out that saving the model as .h5, Hence, I rebuilt a Deep Learning model using Keras, Python with player embeddings and I got excellent performance.
