Globally Convergent Policy Search for Output Estimation
We introduce the first direct policy search algorithm which provably converges to the globally optimal dynamic filter for the classical problem of predicting the outputs of a linear dynamical system, given noisy, partial observations. Despite the ubiquity of partial observability in practice, theoretical guarantees for direct policy search algorithms, one of the backbones of modern reinforcement learning, have proven difficult to achieve. This is primarily due to the degeneracies which arise when optimizing over filters that maintain an internal state. In this paper, we provide a new perspective on this challenging problem based on the notion of informativity, which intuitively requires that all components of a filter's internal state are representative of the true state of the underlying dynamical system. We show that informativity overcomes the aforementioned degeneracy. Specifically, we propose a regularizer which explicitly enforces informativity, and establish that gradient descent on this regularized objective - combined with a "reconditioning step" - converges to the globally optimal cost at a $O(1/T)$ rate.
Modeling Probabilistic Reduction using Information Theory and Naive Discriminative Learning
This study compares probabilistic predictors based on information theory with Naive Discriminative Learning (NDL) predictors in modeling acoustic word duration, focusing on probabilistic reduction. We examine three models using the Buckeye corpus: one with NDL-derived predictors using information-theoretic formulas, one with traditional NDL predictors, and one with N-gram probabilistic predictors. Results show that the N-gram model outperforms both NDL models, challenging the assumption that NDL is more effective due to its cognitive motivation. However, incorporating information-theoretic formulas into NDL improves model performance over the traditional model. This research highlights a) the need to incorporate not only frequency and contextual predictability but also average contextual predictability, and b) the importance of combining information-theoretic metrics of predictability and information derived from discriminative learning in modeling acoustic reduction.

Neural Conversation Models and How to Rein Them in: A Survey of Failures and Fixes

Recent conditional language models are able to continue any kind of text source in an often seemingly fluent way. This fact encouraged research in the area of open-domain conversational systems that are based on powerful language models and aim to imitate an interlocutor by generating appropriate contributions to a written dialogue. From a linguistic perspective, however, the complexity of contributing to a conversation is high. In this survey, we interpret Grice's maxims of cooperative conversation from the perspective of this specific research area and systematize the literature under the aspect of what makes a contribution appropriate: A neural conversation model has to be fluent, informative, consistent, coherent, and follow social norms. In order to ensure these qualities, recent approaches try to tame the underlying language models at various intervention points, such as data, training regime or decoding. Sorted by these categories and intervention points, we discuss promising attempts and suggest novel ways for future research.

Pragmatic Inference with a CLIP Listener for Contrastive Captioning

We propose a simple yet effective and robust method for contrastive captioning: generating discriminative captions that distinguish target images from very similar alternative distractor images. Our approach is built on a pragmatic inference procedure that formulates captioning as a reference game between a speaker, which produces possible captions describing the target, and a listener, which selects the target given the caption. Unlike previous methods that derive both speaker and listener distributions from a single captioning model, we leverage an off-the-shelf CLIP model to parameterize the listener. Compared with captioner-only pragmatic models, our method benefits from rich vision language alignment representations from CLIP when reasoning over distractors. Like previous methods for discriminative captioning, our method uses a hyperparameter to control the tradeoff between the informativity (how likely captions are to allow a human listener to discriminate the target image) and the fluency of the captions. However, we find that our method is substantially more robust to the value of this hyperparameter than past methods, which allows us to automatically optimize the captions for informativity - outperforming past methods for discriminative captioning by 11% to 15% accuracy in human evaluations

Despite the ubiquity of partial observability in practice, theoretical guarantees for direct policy search algorithms, one of the backbones of modern reinforcement learning, have proven difficult to achieve. This is primarily due to the degeneracies which arise when optimizing over filters that maintain internal state. In this paper, we provide a new perspective on this challenging problem based on the notion of $\textit{informativity}$, which intuitively requires that all components of a filter's internal state are representative of the true state of the underlying dynamical system. We show that informativity overcomes the aforementioned degeneracy. Specifically, we propose a $\textit{regularizer}$ which explicitly enforces informativity, and establish that gradient descent on this regularized objective - combined with a ``reconditioning step'' - converges to the globally optimal cost a $\mathcal{O}(1/T)$ rate. Our analysis relies on several new results which may be of independent interest, including a new framework for analyzing non-convex gradient descent via convex reformulation, and novel bounds on the solution to linear Lyapunov equations in terms of (our quantitative measure of) informativity.
