Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultima Inducted Into World Video Game Hall of Fame
The inductees debuted across decades, advancing technologies along the way and expanding not only the number of players, but the ages and interests of those at the controls, Hall of Fame authorities said in revealing the winners. The Hall of Fame recognizes electronic games of all types -- arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile. The Class of 2024 was selected by experts from among a field of 12 finalists that also included Elite, Guitar Hero, Metroid, Neopets, Tokimeki Memorial, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and You Don't Know Jack. The honor for Atari's Asteroids comes 45 years after its 1979 debut in arcades, where it was Atari's bestselling coin-operated game. The game's glowing space-themed graphics and sound effects made their way from more than 70,000 arcade units into millions of living rooms when a home version of Asteroids was made available on the Atari 2600.
Asteroids and Resident Evil join the World Video Game Hall of Fame
The Strong National Museum of Play has revealed this year's inductees into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultima have made the cut. While that means the likes of Guitar Hero, Metroid and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater miss out from the slate of finalists, it would be hard to make a case against any of the five inductees. Games are selected for the hall of fame based on a number of criteria, including cultural impact and their influence on the industry. Asteroids absolutely fits the bill. The 1979 game was an enormous hit.

Established in 2015, the World Video Game Hall of Fame honors all kinds of electric games – computer, handheld, console, arcade and mobile – and has recognized 24 games since its founding. Criteria for inductees examines four categories: the game's icon status (is it widely recognized?), longevity (is it more than a passing fad?), geographical reach (are people playing it all over the world?) and influence (has the game affected the industry as a whole, popular culture or society in general?). And the 2019 inductees are... (drumroll, please!) "Microsoft Solitaire" debuted in 1990 on the Windows 3.0 computing platform and became ubiquitous around the world, according to a news release from The Strong Museum.

Meet the Hall of Fame's robot rookies
From 2008: "WALL-E" trailer features the stars from "Toy Story." The results are in, and the latest laureates in the Robot Hall of Fame range from the absolutely lovable WALL-E cartoon character to the positively scary BigDog robo-runner. This year's class, announced during a Tuesday night ceremony at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, also includes the pint-sized, soccer-playing NAO humanoid robot and the PackBot bomb-disposal robot. The Robot Hall of Fame was created in 2003 by Carnegie Mellon University to recognize excellence in robotics technology. More than two dozen machines, real and fictional, have been inducted over the past nine years, but the Class of 2012 is the first to be selected by popular vote instead of a panel of judges.

Dungeons & Dragons rolls a 20, now a critical hit in the Toy Hall of Fame with Little People and the swing
Fisher-Price Little People, Dungeons & Dragons and the swing became the newest toys Thursday to be inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Finalists that did not make the cut include Care Bears, Clue, Uno, coloring books, Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots, Transformers, Nerf foam balls, and pinball. The museum said inductees are judged on whether they are widely respected and remembered and must be more than a "passing fad." Other considerations include how the toys foster creativity and learning, and whether they profoundly change play for children. Fisher-Price Little People hit the market in 1959.
