CAR-T cell therapy is already a potent treatment for certain cancers. Now, a small study is showing early promise for managing HIV. A Miracle cancer therapy that involves engineering a patient's own immune cells is being repurposed for HIV, and early results from two individuals hint at its promise for long-term control of the virus. As part of a clinical trial, scientists took people's own immune cells and reprogrammed them in a lab to recognize and attack HIV in the body. After a single infusion of the modified cells, two individuals with HIV now have undetectable levels of the virus--one for nearly two years and the other for almost a year.

Speaking at WIRED Health on April 16, Daniel Davis, an immunologist at Imperial College London, detailed how researchers are using advanced microscopes to uncover previously invisible dynamics in the human immune system, showing that there are multiple processes happening on a "nanoscale" that was previously out of reach. That new view is already reshaping how immunity is understood.
Pioneering new treatment reverses incurable blood cancer in some patients
A therapy that would once have been considered a feat of science fiction has reversed aggressive and incurable blood cancers in some patients, doctors report. The treatment involves precisely editing the DNA in white blood cells to transform them into a cancer-fighting living drug. The first girl to be treated, whose story we reported in 2022, is still free of the disease and now plans to become a cancer scientist. Now eight more children and two adults with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia have been treated, with almost two thirds (64%) of patients in remission. T-cells are supposed to be the body's guardians - seeking out and destroying threats - but in this form of leukaemia, they grow out of control.
