"Mountainhead" Channels the Absurdity of the Tech Bro
Four tech billionaires walk into a mansion. It sounds like the setup for a punch line, but it also forms nearly the entire conceit behind "Mountainhead," a savagely entertaining but somewhat shallow new satire written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, the creator of "Succession." The film, which is streaming on HBO's Max, is a sort of chamber play, its stage a modernist castle in Utah--the Mountainhead of the title--overlooking snowy peaks. The players are a quartet of friends, or, more accurately, frenemies, who resemble a mishmash of real-world Silicon Valley founders. Steve Carell plays Randall Garrett, the group's Peter Thiel-esque mentor who, not unlike the late Steve Jobs, has cancer that his doctor tells him is incurable.

The New Movie From the Creator of em Succession /em Is Less a Satire Than a Documentary
For the quartet of tech billionaires in Jesse Armstrong's Mountainhead, ideas are so powerful that nothing else seems real. Holed up in a resplendent snowy retreat built by meditation-app developer Hugo Van Yalk (Jason Schwartzman), they're glued to their phones as the outside world is erupting into chaos, thanks in no small part to the wildfire spread of A.I. deepfakes on the social media platform owned by the world's richest man, Venis Parish (Cory Michael Smith). People in Gujarat are being burned alive after being falsely accused of desecrating religious symbols, and Midwestern Americans are machine-gunning each other over minor disagreements, but for these four men, the widespread devastation is in some ways proof of concept that they're as important as they believe themselves to be. And besides, those bodies going up in flames are just images on a tiny screen, so distant they might as well be theoretical. As he trudges through the snow with Randall (Steve Carell), the venture capitalist who serves as the group's self-appointed philosopher king, Venis asks him, "Do you … believe in other people?"

HUGO -- Highlighting Unseen Grid Options: Combining Deep Reinforcement Learning with a Heuristic Target Topology Approach
Lehna, Malte, Holzhüter, Clara, Tomforde, Sven, Scholz, Christoph
With the growth of Renewable Energy (RE) generation, the operation of power grids has become increasingly complex. One solution could be automated grid operation, where Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has repeatedly shown significant potential in Learning to Run a Power Network (L2RPN) challenges. However, only individual actions at the substation level have been subjected to topology optimization by most existing DRL algorithms. In contrast, we propose a more holistic approach by proposing specific Target Topologies (TTs) as actions. These topologies are selected based on their robustness. As part of this paper, we present a search algorithm to find the TTs and upgrade our previously developed DRL agent CurriculumAgent (CAgent) to a novel topology agent. We compare the upgrade to the previous CAgent and can increase their L2RPN score significantly by 10%. Further, we achieve a 25% better median survival time with our TTs included. Later analysis shows that almost all TTs are close to the base topology, explaining their robustness

Generative AI Podcasts Are Here. Prepare to Be Bored
Here's the thing about podcasts: There are too many of them. More than 4 million, to be precise, according to the database Podcast Index. In the past three days alone, nearly 103,000 individual podcast episodes were published online, a deluge of audio content so voluminous that listeners need never run out of options. You could spend the rest of your life working through the existing true crime catalog on Apple Podcasts or the sports chat shows on Spotify and end up dying of old age in 2070 while Michael Barbaro reads an ad for Mailchimp to your corpse. In the ongoing generative AI gold rush, though, opportunistic entrepreneurs are looking for entry into even the most saturated markets.
Vital: The Future of Healthcare
Vital: The Future of Healthcare is an anthology of short stories. Vital has already gathered stories from leading futurist writers, weaving together disparate visions of what comes next in health and health science. Our visions of the future -- whether dark or hopeful, thrilling or mundane -- have always challenged us to examine our world. What challenges will we face? Vital: The Future of Healthcare aims to explore these questions as they relate to humanity's physical and mental well-being.

Global World Order and the Creation of AGI - What Hugo de Garis is Right About Dan Faggella
Hugo de Garis is one of the first AGI thinkers that I came across in 2012, when I decided to focus my life on the post-human transition. Aside from Bostrom and Al-Rodhan, few thinkers molded my early ideas about AGI and transhumanism more than de Garis. I believe that two of his ideas are extremely important, and are somewhat absent in most of the artificial general intelligence conversations today (and even most of the discussions from 2010-2014). Those ideas are what de Garis calls "Globism" (global world order) and "Cosmism" (the belief that humanity should create diety-level machine intelligences). The following screenshot is from de Garis's (seemingly neglected) online blog: Since first exploring Kurzweil's ideas in The Singularity is Near, it seemed evident to me that the default mode of technology development would be competition – the economic or military "state of nature" – and that conflict is extremely likely if new forms of thinking and valuing come into existence.
Notre Dame and the culture it inspired – from Matisse to the Muppets
As Notre Dame Cathedral's majestic spire tumbled into the inferno on Monday night, live newsreaders around the world decried the tragic loss of this 12th-century marvel. The great timber roof – nicknamed "the forest" for the thousands of trees used in its beams – was gone, the rose windows feared melted, the heart of Paris destroyed forever. What few realised in the heat of the shocking footage was that much of what was ablaze was a 19th-century fantasy. Like most buildings of this age, Notre Dame is the sum of centuries of restorations and reinventions, a muddled patchwork of myth and speculation. Standing as a sturdy hulk on the banks of the Seine, the great stone pile has never been the most elegant or commanding of the ancient cathedrals, but it became the most famous. Begun in 1163, it was larger than any gothic church before it, employing some of the first flying buttresses to allow taller, thinner walls and larger expanses of glazing – including the spectacular rose windows that projected great cosmic wheels of colour into the luminous interior. "Where would [one] find … such magnificence and perfection, so high, so large, so strong, clothed round about with such a multiple variety of ornaments?"
