How preppers plan to save us if the whole internet collapses

New Scientist

Recent outages have revealed how vulnerable the internet is, but there seems to be no official plan in the event of a catastrophic failure. Vladimir Lenin is said to have warned that all societies are three square meals from chaos. But in the modern world, it is only a Wi-Fi signal that separates us from anarchy. Every aspect of our lives is reliant on computers and the internet, and when they fail, they do so with disorientating speed. This became abundantly clear during power cuts across Spain and Portugal earlier this year.

Sharon Osbourne backs naming airport after Ozzy

BBC News

Sharon Osbourne has said it would be amazing if Birmingham Airport was renamed in honour of her late husband, rock legend Ozzy Osbourne. The TV personality has given her support to a campaign to call the airport Ozzy Osbourne International, which was launched by podcaster and comedian Dan Hudson after the Black Sabbath singer died at the age of 76 in July. More than 70,000 people have signed a petition backing the idea, which Hudson said was inspired by airports being named after famous figures such as John Lennon. It would be amazing, Osbourne said of a potential rebrand. It's just a dream right now, but sometimes dreams come true.

Botto, the Millionaire AI Artist, Is Getting a Personality

WIRED

These images were created by an artist known as Botto, which exhibited at Sotheby's in New York this October and has made more than 4 million from sales of its work. In truth though, Botto needs only GPUs to get creative juices flowing. Botto is a decentralized semi-autonomous artistic agent created in 2021 by the German artist Mario Klingemann; Simon Hudson, a media entrepreneur; and Ziv Epstein, a computer scientist and designer. Botto contains an AI image generator similar to Dall-E or Midjourney but its output is also shaped by a "taste model" that selects the most pleasing images generated by a prompt. The taste model is tuned to reflect the preferences of a community of Botto enthusiasts who vote on the images Botto produces and posts online here.

The Trendy New Trivia Game That's Like Wordle for Straight Men

Slate

We are in the midst of an unprecedented, intergenerational phone-game renaissance. Wordle has become a pillar of the New York Times brand, newspapers everywhere are resurrecting their crossword backpage, and Words With Friends has essentially transformed into a dating app. These games are designed to be approachably mainstream--every English speaker alive can deduce a five-letter word with six chances--but unfortunately, I am a man of unconventional taste. If I'm going to entertain a daily dose of potpourri, I need something weirder, more challenging, and better suited for the precise category of useless knowledge that occupies my brain. That's why the sports-trivia game Immaculate Grid has become a fixture of my morning routine.

The Morning After: 'Cyberpunk 2077' runs into another delay

Engadget

Cyberpunk 2077's woes have continued long after the game launched, with all the issues that entailed. CD Projekt Red announced yesterday that we'll have to wait until the second half of March for the next big patch. The developer cited that recent ransomware hack as the major culprit -- it initially planned to launch the 1.2 patch in February. As you're probably aware, February ends this week. The news is especially frustrating for PS5 owners as the game hasn't returned to the PlayStation Store since it was pulled.

Social media platforms, such as Twitter, provide a totally new perspective in dealing with the traffic problems and is anticipated to complement the traditional methods. The geo-tagged tweets can provide the Twitter users' location information and is being applied in traveler behavior analysis. This paper explores the full potentials of Twitter in deriving travel behavior information and conducts a case study in Manhattan Area. A systematic method is proposed to extract displacement information from Twitter locations. Our study shows that Twitter has a unique demographics which combine not only local residents but also the tourists or passengers. For individual user, Twitter can uncover his/her travel behavior features including the time-of-day and location distributions on both weekdays and weekends. For all Twitter users, the aggregated travel behavior results also show that the time-of-day travel patterns in Manhattan Island resemble that of the traffic flow; the identification of OD pattern is also promising by comparing with the results of travel survey.
